Commiserations, Damian. What a magnificent beast, that Tonka. We love our dog Shady so much we can't imagine life without her. I have also had some fine felines in my time, but perhaps not as pom-pom-y as Tonka. (De-furr the vacuuming for a while.) Pets make us more human. And even witnessing scandals and goings-on, they never judge us!!!

Nice dot-matrix action! That cat *had* been around a while...

how many cats can say they've been on telly?
Not many, but there'd be quite a few who've been on top of a telly - high and warm!
In fact, I hear that kittehs have been strongly lobbying against flat-screen TVs due to the reduced space on top for them to curl up on.

I am sure Tonka is at the Cat Pearly Gates meowing to be let in, or inside the Cat Pearly Gates meowing to be let out.
Heh, I don't know how long it took me to work that one out - "oh you want to be let out (at 5am)? There you go". "Oh you want to be let in (at ten past)? There you go." "Out again so soon?" Oh right... you just want me to get up and give you attention...
Yes, Tonks was on Close Up twice (once in a story about fat pets, which I'm a bit embarrassed about now, since he wasn't really fat, he just looked it) and Breakfast once. A month or so ago they were looking for a cat for Fair Go, and I put his name forward - but he got turned down because he didn't have enough "studio experience"... talk about picky! :)
More cat photos please.

Thanks, Damian. I needed a good sob, right about now. I like, and love, a lot of unanimaled people, but I can never really really understand them as much as I do kindred souls who have an animal or three in their lives. So enriching all that nonjudgemental love. We have a Toru and a Cleo
who are treated as members of the family. As they should be. -
3410,
Touching post, DC. Commiserations.

Fifteen years. He was an expert at jumping on sleeping people's face and falling in the toilet.
More cat photos please.

Here are my pics of Amy's cat Hermes. Hermes is currently missing, we know he's somewhere in Houghton Bay (Wellington). If you live out that way, please keep an eye out.
And here is Jedi. Jedi just came back from the vet (like 10mins ago) where he was told he was overweight and has a heart murmur. So he is going on a diet, now!

After reading my last comment I would like to point out that we really are good owners.

Oh dear, that blog made me rather teary. Reminds me of when I lost my first and bestest cat, Roxy - got her when I was five and she was with me right through my childhood until I finished school.
This probably makes me sound like a weird cat looney but she just seemed to get me - I actually think she was my kitty soulmate. I've met some fabulous cats since then but none come close to my Roxy, and she loved tummy rubs too. Wish I had a pic I could post but they're all the old-fashioned hard-copy types!

Jeeves, deeply disturbed
Hmmm, I've heard of toys of cats, but this is not on, Jeeves!

Toys FOR cats.....

You know how you can tell a good man? One who is kind to cats. Sorry about Tonka, he sounds like a nice fellow too.

On a lighter note - Danielle, I just wanted to compliment you on your cats' names. Laverne and Shirley? Classic.

My cat Harry died 5 years ago last month. He was only a baby (about 2) and I still miss him. He's buried under a rose in my parents' garden, and whenever I am home I visit.
Poor Tonka, and poor Damian.

Shameel! Shamozzle!
(We had a theme: we named all our animals after 70s TV characters. The two dogs are named after Vinnie Barbarino from Welcome Kotter and Miss Ellie from Dallas. Although we may have been a little too dedicated to the theme: I think we dropped the ball by not naming the male dog Nate. Hiphoppin'!)

I'm a bit late on the whole posting thing, but this post just made me get a lump in my throat.
We had to find a home for my beautiful naughty tortie when we left NZ 18months ago. Her new mum is wonderful and amazing and a real cat person, but i still miss my girl and get all teary eyed whenver i get an update about her or photos - esp the messages about the 4am nose rubs!
I hope you're ok and don't make the mistake several of my friends have made and get another pet too soon.
Take care!

JA,
Poor Tonka. Nice to know he went out being held by someone who loved him though.
My very old and slightly senile cat headed out to lie on the grass in sleet and rain to die- only to be retrieved by my mother who took her back inside and held her until she died- so she said "that she would know she was loved"...
Tis a horrible thing, I've had many a teary conversation, lump in throat, 'she/ he was such a good cat'...
Sounds like Tonka was too.

My moggy had to make the last trip to the vet a couple of weeks ago. It was a tough call, but when you accept that ball of fluff into your house and heart, you also have to promise that some day you will make that really difficult decision.
My daughter sent me a few lines she dug up from somewhere that made my eyes leak. They will not go quietly, those who've shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know their spirit still survive.
Old habits still make us think we hear a meow at the door.
Or step back when we drop a tasty morsel on the floor.
Our feet still go around the place the food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night, we miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts belongs to them....
and always will. - Anon
