  • Speaker: Talking past each other:…, in reply to Steve Barnes,

I think it comes from an insecurity thing, if they are too frightened to say it to your face then its not worth taking on board. I kind of pity them and let it be.

A number of women, repeatedly in this thread and elsewhere, have said they no longer feel safe contributing here for a variety of reasons. But no, go ahead and call them chicken and don't bother examining why that might be. That'll totally help.

  • Speaker: Are there opportunities within…, in reply to Mary Meldrum,

It might also be worth bearing in mind that the "helpful" advice fat people get on a literal daily basis is also bullying.

  • Speaker: Not even a statistic, in reply to Rosemary McDonald,

You CAN protect yourself. The Crimes Act specifically allows it. Teach our daughters to defend themselves…permission to go into beserker mode if threatened. Pull out every weapon at their disposal. Teach our daughters that they are in control, teach them to be stroppy and staunch.

So, if you don't do those things/aren't stroppy and staunch...what then?

  • Up Front: Lighting the Dark, in reply to Chris Waugh,

A really nice example of my earlier point? My flatmate will pause things, or tell me it's time to go and make a cup of tea, any time there's a scene in a movie or TV that I might not want to watch. She's my real life trigger warning.

  • Up Front: Lighting the Dark,

And because I didn't say what I came here to say:

To add to your list: Be a safe space. Let people know that you're safe. Don't touch them if they don't want it. Don't expect them to be OK when they're not. Don't assign blame. Don't offer retribution. It takes a lot for some people to feel safe, and it means a huge amount when they do.

  • Up Front: Lighting the Dark, in reply to Grant McDougall,

And the award for point missing goes to Grant McDougall.

Let me put this for you even more plainly. Women are clamouring to tell you about the violence they receive, every day, at the hands of men. The violence comes in words, in fists, in stalking, in being slammed against a wall so hard your teeth crack. It comes in psychological violence, in the headlines in articles blaming women for being attacked. It comes when we are girls, and when we are old women. And from Men Like You. It's not about guns. So shut up and listen.

His attitude to women was certainly a contributing factor,

Not to derail, but, just this once could the conversation be, you know, ABOUT US? Women are clamouring to tell you that this is stuff we deal with daily, constantly, through our whole lives. And it's really hard to do that when we're a "contributing factor".

  • Capture: One picture of you, and no more, in reply to Emma Hart,

    Attachment

Like a lot of my most cherished photos, it was taken in hideously low light and the company of alcohol.

Same. I think this photo is more about the person I'd like to be than the person I am, but it has it all, especially epic duckface and stupidly big hair.

(Selfies and visibility are important to me.)

  • Hard News: Poor Choices, in reply to Emma Hart,

What I remembered was that it massively snowballed, and I had real trouble finding a narrative flow. So, just like single-person writing.

I really want to use Twitter to write a line at a time story now.

You already did. You just received it by text.
