Ten long years, well done Russell and team
Long time reader, sometime commenter but times and interests change but I still appreciate the work you and the afore-mentioned team put into it -
Thank you, Public Address, for making me the man I am today. I have a job I love, I am able to experience things that I normally never would, and I have met (and not met but written to) the most amazing people! Thank you and Happy Birthday!
ps. I wrote to Russell in 2003 when I was looking for an outlet for my writing. He set me up with a few sports contacts and essentially said "start a blog". Best. Advice. Ever.

Can I tell my favourite PAS story now? ;)

Are you asking permission of Hadyn in particular, or more generally? Because if the latter, yes. And if the former, yes.

Well done on 10 years, Russell and the PA team. It's both informative and fun reading and commenting here. Keep up the good work.

Hadyn in particular. It's pretty much one of my favourite stories ever, but he gets this funny look on his face when I tell it....

It's okay, I still have his PA login details...

Random Dude in Bar: Hi, I'm RDIB
Megan: Hi. I'm Megan
RDIB: Wait, are you Megan Wegan?
Megan: I am......but, um, how do you know that?
RDIB: Oh, I recognise you from Public Address.
Hadyn (who has been sitting quietly): Do you recognise me?
RDIB: No? Should I....?I feel bad laughing, but...I can't not. (Given Hadyn is a) a contributor, and I am just a annoying commenter, and b) they'd actually spoken on Twitter previously.

But ... how can some "recognise" you from Public Address? Your awesome syntax?

To be fair we have had a couple of conversations about Megan's... "attributes".

That, possibly. And I used to have an avatar, which appears to have gone missing.
But then, I would not want to cast aspersions on Hadyn’s excellent attributes.

Well, as the author of the post that started it, I was going to thank Russell for the opportunity to foment the Thread Of Doooooom[tm]!
Which, I hardly need add, is the most-commented post ever -- 2203, ahead of the main Hobbit post (Anatomy of a Shambles) with 1696 and Roamin' Holiday from those freshies at Capture, with 1355 comments.
Although if you add up all the comments for the three Hobbit posts, hobbits win :-)

It terrifies me to think how much of my life has been spent typing comments and reading PAS. Well done, Russell and everyone.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to have made online and offline connections with so many smart, decent people who've enriched my life.

Heh. Now, that reminds me of a story I can't tell...

Surely he wasn't displaying them at the bar

Dude, you've been to PAS gatherings. What do you think?

I could not sigh hard enough when that happened.

Yeah right, pretend that there are things you won't say.

Oh Bart. Pretending you don't know there are things I'm not saying because they're even worse.

DATA!
Total words in Public Address posts in 10 years: 4,006,730
Hey, I've just had a crazy thought. With all these clever linguistics people around (whew, that was close), we could have a Public Address Corpus. That would be delicious.
It would be an asset to young learners everywhere, I'm sure.
(Not actually joking - mostly)

Off a measly sample of 4 random pages out of the 660 I've written, I derived an average page word count of 1034 words per page (after weeding out all the stuff I didn't write). Which leads me to conclude I've written around 683,000 words here. Which is more than War and Peace but less than The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. No wonder that novel has never got out yet.
Will look for some data viz love for more.
Does the word count have the smarts to exclude quoted sections?
ETA: What really scares me is that in the last 3 or so years, I've deleted at least 3 times as much as I've written.

For me, it wasn't until doing the guest post thing, that I felt more confident to even take part in conversations here! I was more the sit on the sidelines in admiration of the mind-athletes.
I'm just in training.

Another hearty congrats from an only-occasional poster. I tend to have time for single posts but the succession of bosses I've had since starting posting here would be a whole lot poorer if I posted more.
Thanks and praise be to all who contribute to making this the only blog-site I ever bother to set up when the damn computer crashes & I have to set up a new bunch of favourites.
Sometimes you young people are so earnest and I feel old & jaded & cynical, then another of Emma's threads comes around...
Mr Brown - you ARE the man!
