Back in the olden days, I'd eagerly await the posting of the weekly Hard News transcript to nz.general. But PA is a million times better than that - it looks better, there are no newsgroup nutters, just a splendid community.
The Great Blends are always a good time, and they really need some props because organising quality IRL stuff is hard.
So happy 10th anniversary, Russell and the PA posse! So much love!

DON'T. (Also, the Mortgage Slut thread, which remains, to this day, my favourite/most annoying discussion I've ever had on the internet.)
The Mortgage Slut thread was so good I immediately thought of it again when I saw this week's Listener cover. Keeps on giving...

I have to confess that a) I don’t remember this at all
Neither! (I have a *terrible* memory for arguments with people I don't know very well. Also - and this sounds bad, kinda - I've had so many of those sorts of discussions that they all blur into one big "someone is wrong on the internet" recollection.)
the Mortgage Slut thread
The do what now? Was I involved in that?

Dude. It was your finest hour.
(My bad, it should be Mortgage Slag)

It's always referred to as the Mortgage Slut thread, which means that I was wrong originally. My bad.

Oh man, I totally forgot. Animalistic Penis-Brains! (THAT should be the name of my band.)

I dunno. The word slag isn't used nearly often enough.

Now that we have joined the deck-owning fraternity, I would be happy to host a PAS picnic this summer--if folk are willing to travel to picturesque Hamilton East. Late January, perhaps?
Hmm--not so much a 'rich' lecturer but well-paid for what I do....

I for one would be most keen. Cheers Geoff.

Well, my monitor seems to have gone all blurry as I’ve read this post and all the comments. Stupid wimpy monitor.
And I wonder how I can say how much PAS has changed my life. It’s given me new ideas, new perspectives, new insight. Engaging in the discussion has been tremendously exciting: full of surprises and laughter and tears and irritation and delight. It’s think it’s made me a better person; it’s certainly made me a more knowledgeable and confident one.
And, to my surprise, it’s brought me a bunch of new friends, and people I hope will become friends. And some of these I will be meeting in person for the first time this weekend. I’m so excited.
So, thank you so much Russell, and everybody. You are the best.

has anyone mentioned that cool copyright thread we had a year or two back, yet?
Well, as the author of the post that started it, I was going to thank Russell for the opportunity to foment the Thread Of Doooooom[tm]! (Not that we had the faintest inkling what it would become at the time he asked me.) And, generally, for establishing and supporting this utterly awesome community of people who are,by and large, courteous in the pursuit of decorous discourse. As someone who was slumming it in nz.* when Hard News was a weekly occurrence (not that I recall reading it at the time), it’s comforting that there’s still room amongst the filth for a place where something like the intelligentsia of the NZ online scene can gather.
Being part of PAS has been, and continues to be, an experience. I’ve learned a heap of lessons, some of them very brutal IRL lessons, but also been rounded out somewhat by exposure to so many different perspectives from what’s largely (at least amongst the commenters) the same Political Compass quadrant – collectivist libertarians. It’s also let me feel like I can get some of the things I know about slightly obscure aspects of our society’s functioning – how emergency services (should) manage incidents; and how bad it could really be that a dirty blogger was able to virtually stroll about the WINZ network – into the eye of a public who don’t understand and, consequently, struggle to grasp the significance or propriety of things that are currently in the news. PAS provides me the forum to do that while also being a thirty-something with too much time on his hands and too many opinions.
So cheers, Russell and everyone else, for creating this place that so many of us enjoy. And as this will be post 3,069 for me, I feel terribly inadequate by comparison to Sacha who is well into five figures despite having arrived two years later!

Congratulations Russell, it's been a mighty thing and will continue to be so. And thank you for offering the space to contribute and also linking to various bits I've created elsewhere - each time I'm extraordinarily grateful.
And thanks for the vast circle of knowledge I've been able to tap into by reading and contributing to PAS over the years, and the friends I've made here.
Special and hugely important - on ya!
-
Russell, can you repost the bank account for people to contribute please?
I keep thinking "I"ll contribute when I get some money spare" but that never seems to happen and I got engaged two weeks ago so I suspect it won't happen in the next few years either.

Please accept much gratitude and admiration from this very infrequent poster but consistent lurker who has enjoyed from the beginning also.
You have enabled a high standard of cogitation and reflection amongst multiple generations as I should tell you that two of my friends who lurk here and have for many years are of a similar age to myself and that's 78.
So large congrats and thanks and you certainly all speak to a wide age group :-)

Thumbs up to Russell and the PA crew.

Well done Russell, a significant anniversary. As a relative newbie, I'm seeing what a great community PA is with its many quirky and idiosyncratic contributors. I just love the way a thread starts at A and will say end at B - but it can go all the way to Z at times if you get my drift.
Love to see you in Christchurch again some time when time and finances allow, bringing the Great Blend, Media3 or any other forum you're involved with.

Having been one who has received as well as given it is good that I have not had the opportunity of having to beg my way back in!!! And I haven't been chucked for trolling!!!!!
PS has been illuminating, revealing and educational since I tested the water.
Thank you Russell n'all.
