  • Mark Graham,

One more post, Sacha and it tips to 14,000 (My God, where do you find the time?) :)

  • Allan Moyle,

Congratulations and thank you to you and the other contributors for arresting my middle aged slide towards a procrastinating, conservative state of mind.

  • Sacha,

Quite a few of you seem to identify as being on the autism spectrum (not me: I'm totes ADD)

You do realise that's on the spectrum?

  • Sacha, in reply to Mark Graham,

Crikey, you're right. And the answer to that is a whole story best told over a coffee or beer sometime. Features that PAS may eventually provide with advanced 3D nanotech printing after that micropayment system is installed.

But your brain is better for it, isn't it darling? Yes it is. Good boy.

  • Karen White,

I was a lurker here for ages, because I was WAY to intimidated to join the fray. I figured anything I could say, someone else could say it smarter.

    +1

But eventually found the courage! PA is my daily fix. Congratulaions all

  • Tamara,

What s milestone indeed! I've been avidly listening and then reading and later commenting on Hard News and its offshoots since back at Uni. You guys make what I often find boring (eg politics, elections, economics) really interesting. Both the bloggers and the commenters.

I would also be happy to set up a regular subscription payment.

And here's me getting excited about approaching my century...

I started listening to Hard News while driving a truck as a school leaver, which may or may not have involved me making the occasional trip around the block before unloading so as not to miss the end...

Now I am a month away from finishing my PhD in History. It's no understatement to say that Hard News played a big role in me making that transition. And for extending said PhD about six months longer that it should have been..

Cheers to Russell, and to the hundreds of wise voices that have gathered around you.

  • JackElder, in reply to tonyH,

Though a subscription or similar wouldn’t be right, let’s hope PA readers step up and follow Nick Spencer’s example of a contribution via AP.

The Bugle recently adopted a similar funding model. It's a popular podcast that started out as part of the Times Online - then got cut in the aftermath of the hacking scandals. The cast and staff took the name and went off-piste on their own. They've recently implemented a "voluntosubscription" model, where the podcast is still freely available but listeners can sign up to make either one-off or regular payments. I've signed up for regular contributions. This probably wouldn't work with a more irregular content stream, but people seem happier to set up regular payments to get regular content - particularly if it's from a strong brand that they trust (as PAS is). Is it working? Well, the Bugle is still managing to rent studio space in both London and NY and pay the producers, so presumably enough other people have kicked in.

So a useful precedent for people actually putting their hands in their pockets.

  • JackElder,

    And two related points:

The stumbling block for getting cash off people online is to actually get them to make the payment, rather than just having a vague intention to "get around to it". A regular, small payment means you only have to do this once per person, rather than relying on a staccato series of shakedowns. Make it as easy as possible to sign up for a smallish subscription and I think you'll be surprised by the results.

Secondly: I am quietly happy to notice that I've been registered on PAS for several months longer than Megan. Suck on it, Wegan!

  • David Cormack,

Without wishing to join the gush, I have a special place in my heart for PA. Though it says I've been a member since the beginning, I don't contribute a whole heap. In 2008, at the end of a brutal Democratic primary season I came on to a thread and made a (foolish) comment about Hillary Clinton finally bowing out (hint: it was less poetic than that). I got torn a new one by Emma, Danielle et al. And rightly so.

Since then I've made a conscious effort to understand shit before commenting on it. So chur for helping me grow up.

Yeah, but you've made 500-odd fewer posts. Wait, I think that maybe looks worse for me.

Many thanks, Russell. Just... thank you. And I would be very happy to run with some sort of micro-payments / subscription system.

Also, Dr Tibby, I haven't forgotten that you referred to me once as your oldest commenter. Pre-System days... so it was a long time ago.

  • Greg Wood,

A hearty, hug-based congrats. Too much history and goodness to share; just, yay.

I must say I am almost daily thankful for the time I finally heard from you that morning after the night before on Simon's balcony with All The Whisky in Singapore.

I really thought I'd broken the Public Address System forever.

As for ways of keeping you up:

    - Keith's "just throw money at me for this one" currently suits my ADD-ish modus operandum
    - But I'd pay an ongoing sub for sure
    - But how to share the wealth? I'd like to think we'd have something like the Flattr model as an ongoing micropayments option for a community: http://flattr.com/
    - Better still though, surely, would be a remote-triggerable whisky dispenser in your office: write great post => lots of clicks => satisfying reward; would attract likeminded friends to join in the celebrations.

    Righto!

Best you don't, I was a bit of a dickhead. But I like to think I'm marginally less dickheadish now.

Snap. Regular bulk site subscriptions seem easy enough to set up just as automatic payments. Allocating payment to individual contributors takes either editorial engagement, or a crowd-voting system, or both.

I'm re-reading Dance of the Peacocks just now, and this morning read "James Bertram used to say that things always happened to him in December. For Geoffrey Cox. six months into the job in 1956, it would be November. Then I clicked on public address.

Just to say (I suppose I'm a lurker, but I only recently found out how to post) thank you one and all, but especially Russell, for so often being enlighteningly on my wavelength these years.

On reading this, my other persona, who started in 2009, was tempted to come out of retirement to say thanks too. Yeah, it was an education in those early stages of my involvement. The difference it made when I started meeting everyone IRL was huge.

Russell, Fiona, Emma, Sacha, Jackie, Danielle, Sofie, Steve, Jolisa, Richard, Craig, Bart, Gio, Ben, Robyn (I'm sure I've probably forgotten several) and more recently Lilith, Nora, Jon, and many others through Capture, have all become people I value as friends. I'd go a long way for you all, and go even further to find a better bunch of people.

    Arohanui.

I'm fairly sure Public Address peaked that time me, Dan and Hadyn did the 2010 football World Cup blog. It's been pretty much down hill since then. :)

Congrats to you Russ and everyone that has made #PAS an awesome place to be. Now, has anyone mentioned that cool copyright thread we had a year or two back, yet?

DON'T. (Also, the Mortgage Slut thread, which remains, to this day, my favourite/most annoying discussion I've ever had on the internet.)
