  • Alfie,

You'd have to wonder if TV3's consultation process re CL has a predetermined outcome for a while. TV3 signs an annual agreement with Mazda, Campbell Live's main sponsor (since 2008). This year MediaWorks only extended the deal for three months -- and that deal expires at the end of May.

Bill Ralston, a former TVNZ head of current affairs, said the short-term deal was highly unusual and only made sense if a decision about the future of the show had already been made.

"A three-month deal makes no sense, unless they were - at the point at which they negotiated that three-month deal - considering getting rid of Campbell Live."

A MediaWorks spokeswoman rejected suggestions the show was being railroaded into an early end. "It would be completely incorrect to suggest the outcome of this review is predetermined."

Mr Ralston said longer-term sponsorships made more financial sense for broadcasters.

"If you're a cash-strapped TV channel like they are, you'd want that cash booked in for at least a year."

At least the CL team are maintaining a sense of humour.

Last night, in an open dig at network bosses who have suggested replacing the show with a soap opera, Campbell Live opened to the theme tune Let Me Entertain You.

That's probably not too far from the truth Andrew.

A couple of days ago I mentioned Key's propensity to appear in every second bloody news item. Toby Manhire has noticed the same phenomenon.

If TV3's polarising breakfast host is Paul Henry Everywhere, the PM is John Key Everything. He may only do soundbites - as in refusing to discuss the details of the Dirty Politics material - but almost never a "no comment".

On Tuesday, he was asked by Newstalk ZB Canterbury's Chris Lynch whether the demise of TV3's Campbell Live programme would be bad for democracy, given it would mean "fewer programmes on commercial television holding the Government to account".

Another PM in another country might have said they weren't about to pronounce on what should be on television. Not our guy. "No," he began. "I mean, you know, firstly, its role in life isn't to hold the Government to account. It's, you know, to entertain its viewers and to, you know, basically to follow news stories, but, you know, a great many of those don't actually involve the Government."

Some thought this was an outrageous thing to say. I just thought it was bloody strange. On he went, making the obligatory mention of the role of social media, some scheduling suggestions ("people want lighter entertainment at that time of night"), and so on. All in a day's work for this many-hatted prime minister. The work-rate of the ABs' front-row, 50 Shades of Grey, potato harvesting in Galway: he has an opinion on everything. He's probably using a pseudonym to post an online comment beneath this article at this very moment.

    heh!

I notice Campbell has been using Key's glib words back at him:
'Holding people to account' came up on Thursday (I think)
and he signed off last night saying "I hope you were entertained"
but you all know that 'cos you watch it any way...

Interesting snippets of info from Trevett in the Herald this morn
NZ on Air appointment is cosy.

As National's tenure in Government has rolled on, more and more former MPs and party office holders have been appointed to boards and other bodies. The party links are rarely disclosed and often slip under the radar because the names are not widely known.

I thought that Kim showed great restraint in not pointing out to Key that his nose was growing considerably longer with each evasive answer he concocted. Go Kim Hill!

  • Howard Edwards,

Regarding low ratings versus importance to society, there is an interesting interview of John Stewart in the Guardian - including the following:

Much as he might wince to hear it, for the past 16 years Stewart has occupied a place in America’s cultural and political life far greater than the small audience of his cable show would suggest.

    Voices in the bewilderness...

    great restraint

I needed that to not defenestrate the radio, while listening to that misanthropic trope peddler, Matthew Hooton on Nine to Noon...
He took pains to insist that if Nicky Hager is a journalist, then he (Hooton) is the captain of the All Blacks - he really does think like John Key, poor deluded soul.

I note on his bio page of influence peddlers and tinkerers Exceltium that he takes pride in having helped create that too-big-to-fail basket of eggs known as Fonterra - which is now a top heavy millstone for our primary production sector , facing diminishing returns and a crumbling international market.

Dairying addiction may well bring this country to its knees...
    ...on so many fronts.

  • Cecelia, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

I have just listened online to Kim Hill take Key to task and the Hooten/Williams show. Sounds as if Hooten got out of the wrong (Right) side of the bed this morning. He can sound quite rational but he was foaming at the mouth today. Reminds me of how he reacted when David Cunliffe was elected leader. Funnily enough one of his bugbears was Cunliffe's CV and how he claimed a role in the establishment of Fonterra.

It was wonderful to hear Kim Hill interview Key but unfortunately they went onto the Abbot thing which could be twisted in Key's favour, "that's why we need these agencies."

"At the end of the day" though, he and Hooten say Hager is a thief and liar then "everyone spies on everyone else anyway". So is Hager right or not, Mr Key?

Key used his usual 'many of Hager's spying claims have been disproved anyway' statement - I can't remember any specific instances of this, at best it has been proved that not as many people are interested as I'd hope, but no one ever asks 'which specific claims were proved wrong Mr Key?'

...and then we get Hooton foaming at the mouth - as a 'Right Wing activist' he finds it intolerable that their might be a 'sinister' to his 'dexter' - at least Kathryn Ryan did make that point, it went straight over Hooton's hot little head.

Not long ago, when Hooten was desperately trying to distance himself from Dirty Politics, he managed to portray an illusion of reason. He appeared for a while to be positioning himself as "a sensible voice of the right" -- where there's currently a gaping gap in the NZ market.

Then he comes out with this sort of nonsense and blows his credibility right out of the water. 2/10.

Most ‘normal people’- I use that term pretty loosely – would recoil in horror at the prospect of there being a handful of people who considered them to be liars.

It takes a special type of monster to cynically gamble on the probability that no more than 50% of people over the age of 18 will call them out on this compulsion. Most sapiens might hesitantly throw caution to the wind and just tell the truth, yet still we vote for this ilk + jesters like they’re going out of fashion.

I'm glad to see that Hooton's vacuousness remains a reliable source of lightweight entertainment.

John Key is an adolescent, with a fetish

Is there a known cure? I remember a video made to demonstrate a form of therapy for anti-social compulsive behavior in children. The subject was a young girl who, among other things, was a chronic hair puller.

The first scene showed her having a story read to her by a guy with the kind of quiff that Dick Driver once sported on Radio With Pictures. The girl could be seen eyeing up the guy's hair while appearing to pay little attention to the story. Before long she'd grabbed the quiff and given it a hearty and utterly shameless tug.

The process was repeated with a female, whose story reading skills failed to save her. Finally the girl was shown having a story read to her by an older man. While she didn't appear to be too taken with his reading there was no hair pulling.

The only problem, and one would have to have been such a party pooper to point it out, was that the last story reader was completely bald.

It’s almost amusing how DPF’s mitigating response amounts to “But Key is a good boss, who we know always behaves well, because … people whose salaries depend on him won’t say anything bad about him”.
