Yeah, my mother's house in Timaru is currently empty, but the cats are SO stressed, and the idea of putting them in the car and then keeping them locked in the house... too much.

Two words. Hot shower. The cats will adapt, surely? And the absence of aftershocks might help settle their nerves, as much as yours.
Honestly I think it's just amazing that people like David and yourself are coherent at all. As for writing his article on his phone at 2am, that should be worth a Qantas award on it's own.

Just watched some footage on TV1 of the rescue of a woman from the PG building this morning. Talk about walking up a ladder from your freaking grave.

Most facilities are working at my place in Upper Riccarton/Sockburn, if people want to use them and can get here (I am currently without car).
I am rationing things like showers because of not wanting to put water into the waste system, but am prepared to make exceptions for people in need :)

I'm not in Christchurch, I'm in Wellington and can't stop crying and shaking. One friend has still not checked in, two others have reported no more than 'ok' then silence.
I know it's okay to feel like this, but I don't want to feel like this.

I still haven't heard from Blair Parkes, who was down as the musical talent. Worries me a bit.
Blair is ok, I've heard. I've just had a text from his fellow L.E.D-er Marcus Thomas who said "have heard through grapevine that he is ok. chimney down, I think. He doesn't seem to respond to texts"
So it looks like he, Amanda and their youngster are ok, but the cell towers in Sumner / Brighton are probably just kaput.
Also, Helen Greenfield, their L.E.D.s bandmate lives in Lyttelton and is ok, apart from a rather messy house, according to her F/b page.

I got one text from Blair saying they were fine but the house was "rooted", but then nothing, so maybe he ran out of money/power for phone.
I drove around a fair bit today checking on some unaccounted-for folks and taking them drinking water and bits of food.
A lot of the roads on the east side are fucked, but it's worth doing I think cos a lot of people are pretty isolated and might not be a priority for a while (but I haven't actually heard much official so I don't know what the central planners are doing). Folks are ok, but this thing's not going away any time soon and support is needed.
Anyway, if you're able, I think it's worth making the effort to get to people.
Also a lot really need fuel for cars because they can't go anywhere and can't risk trying to refuel and getting stuck. So they're staying in munted houses.
So yeah, I might be going against the official word here, but my experience tells me if you know people in there and have a fairly sturdy vehicle and can fill it with lots of water (we used large plastic rubbish bins with lids in the back of a truck), maybe some food, some fuel in a jerry can - then maybe think about getting some relief to some people.
It kind of seems minor given the scale, but folks today were appreciative.
I'll be doing the same tomorrow, so if you know of anyone who needs anything or checking up on or whatever:

This expatriate Cantabrian/Sumnerite is overwhelmed by how wonderful a forum PAS has been for up-to-date and accurate information about what's going on, and for empathy and human kindness. I want to give it the Nobel Peace Prize. Seriously. Sitting 12000 miles away, you just hunger for good info.
Lilith - did your rellies say how much damage there is to houses in Sumner on the flat ground? Am kind of worried about my currently unoccupied house. Unimportant compared to people with real problems, and will no doubt hear from my neighbours at some point, but still curious.

My family is safe, although not without a scare.
Just been talking to ChCh band the Transistors (well, one of them). They're all safe, even if their flats are absolutely totalled. Good to hear most of the ChCh PAS’ers are safe and sound.

Hi Biobbs, I have a few rellies in Sumner and mostly houses seem Ok except for a few near clifftop edges and under cliffs. The houses that were in the news being evacuated were all on Kinsey Terrace (Clifton) where it sounds like there is some ground instability engineers need to look at. A case of "houses being evacuated in Sumner" morphing to "Sumner being evacuated". AFAIK Sumner isn't doing particularly worse than anywhere else. You can email me your address and I might be able to give you more specific info if any of my peeps are nearby.

Yes, Creon. My friend Kathy is in Waimari Beach which is east – they have water but no power or sewrage, and they aren’t sure where to access supermarkets, cash machines etc. Robyn Gallagher is working, I believe, on this website which will be of help at some point. But of course, if one has no power, then accessing the internet is a problem. Another thing to note is that Courier Post won’t be operating till at least Monday, so even if you want to send anything to friends/family specifically, there’s actually no realistic way of doing that. I was going to send her batteries – hopefully they will have power by Monday but……

It might just be me, but I’m detecting escalating levels of asperity in the voices of people who are explaining one more time why they’re not going to speculate on the death toll or missing numbers. Seriously, I know the media have a job to do – and for the most part are doing it damn well – but really…
Of course, these are the same people who'd be demanding a public flogging if a body was misidentified (or, even worse, a family was told someone was dead when they weren't) or a substantially inaccurate missing list was released.
