  • Not The Messiah, in reply to Katharine Moody,

I just had a look at that site. What a great idea.
I like the Party thing especially if you can get lots of bands on board.
Bands have to work the gigs hard these days to try and make money ( and sometimes fame ), younger folk are into going out to pubs etc and having a great time. There are a lot of really good young bands/ musicians around and often they are often more politically aware.
I saw a video from Lorde, who although she is/ was to young to vote, she was encouraging younger folk to get out and vote. Great.
A positive win win all round .

    That sucked eh.
Those poor families have suffered so much already and I can't imagine how sick they feel now after seeing this. Bloody Key and his lies...
John Campbell seems to be the only Media entity out there that gives a damn.

Carrying this discussion further I really look forward to John signing us up to TPPA as soon as possible so we can get our microchip implants. I don’t drink Tui but I may just be forced to, by whatever Mutli-National that owns it and most other NZ breweries now.

International Day of Action Against the TPPA: Kiwis Fight Back – 8 November – #TPPANoWay

There will be a protest being organised in a town or city near you.

Yes. Respect from both Hone and John for each other and that came through powerfully. Hone seems very grounded and his comments about his Mokos jumping all over him and how real and important that was for him, that touched me. Having grandkids of my own I know the total buzz you get from that.

Thanks Sofie - I'll make a note of that. I've just given Facebook away for a while - too many pictures of fluffy kittens and twee self help sayings put me right off.
If you try and get people involved in discussing anything political you can almost see them run for their high brick wall reality proof shelters.
And it eats up valuable time spent doing real things.

Kaitaia doesn't have traffic lights let alone any way for people out in the boondocks to get to a polling station in a town centre.

Possible. Who knows what Winston will do at any given moment in time.
Key has made his decision on his investigation already - he won't change. " I'm right, your wrong " fuck that got up my nose. He doesn't want to find anything more than his narrow investigation is designed to come up with.
I loved the comment from ( I think ) Glenn Greenwald when he said the something like the Beast looking at his own belly.

  • Katharine Moody, in reply to Richard Grevers,

And am I too cynical thinking that the main reason Key will court Winston is to gag him from demanding an investigation of all the dirt?

Well that's the very reason Winston gave as to why Key might call him. Winston said he wouldn't be bribed - he was there to do exactly what those that voted for him expected him to do - keep the Government honest. I think he knows a lot more than what has already come out in Dirty Politics. Here's hoping.

We purposefully watch One News and then flick over to Campbell Live at 7pm ON THE DOT. It's our way of 'digitally signalling' to TVNZ what a crap show they have in that time slot.

You know, they go about how two millionaires couldn’t buy a seat in 2014 but there is another millionaire whose party got given a seat, quite a valuable one and he will always be given it.

Sometimes that seat has been crucial to the formation of government. Millionaires can buy seats, but just on the right.

  • izogi, in reply to Katharine Moody,

The Nats took an overwhelming majority of the party votes there (nearly twice that of Labour) – another lie by the PM (?).

Good thing it didn’t come out before the election. I have it on reliable authority that telling people stuff before they vote amounts to some kind of electoral sabotage.

Interesting timing for such an OIA release, too, incidentally.

One of the strangest electorate voting results has to be Ohariu Belmont.
Apart from being National's lapdog and voting accordingly what policies did he manage to get through Parliament in the last term?

There was his f....d up Psychoactive Substances Bill.
It was only after Campbell Live ran story after story on this insidious shit did he finally pull the plug on it. The amount of personal damage this bill caused was devastating and sickening. Did he care...Only when the heat got too much.
I believe he intends on reintroducing an amended version of this bill again this term. What a dangerous experiment again.

He introduced the Student Loan Amendment Bill targeting students who haven't or can't repay their enormous student debts and have escaped the country to avoid repayment. Ok these debts are substantial. He has looked at revoking their passports. Shaky ground there.

Oh yes he had to resign over the GCSB leak, refused to release emails that may have proved his innocence and got caught out unwisely trying to get " friendly " with Andrea Vance.

And Ohariu Belmont votes him back in again. Oh dear oh dear. What are they smoking or popping there.

in many respects the pattern hasn’t changed much from the previous election.

The leftward rotation of the Labour electorates is very noticeable. Great graph.

    You might not have realised that his son (James Dunne), now a partner with Chen Palmer, was the lead lawyer lobbying his Dad on behalf of the synthetic cannabis importers;

    http://www.chenpalmer.com/people/james-dunne/

    However according to Peter - they never discussed it;

How convenient the Cabinet office found no conflict of interest. More Dirty Politics, I suspect.

I suspect there’s a fairly close correlation with demographics. Checking out the Herald’s compilation for Ohariu, there definitely seems to be a marked difference in preference depending on which booths you look at. For anyone who knows Ohariu, the huge swings in his favour were specifically around Khandallah and Churton Park/Glenside, where Dunne won individual booths by many hundreds at a time. Other areas like Johnsonville, Ngaio around to Wadestown, and most of Tawa were usually at most 50/50, if not significantly in Anderson’s favour. Cross the motorway to Newlands and Anderson’s convincingly taking every polling booth except the one nearest to Mark Avenue which is a new development with different characteristics.

It's more a case of those who voted for the Ohariu Labour & Green candidates either not grasping tactical voting, or being blindly tribalistic in their voting. Same goes for Epsom. This is despite the Green candidate in Ohariu, and the Labour & Green candidates in Epsom, not actively going for the electorate vote.

  • Steve Parks, in reply to Richard Grevers,

    “Dad just died!”
“Oh dear, do you you need me to contact a funeral director?”
“No, a real estate agent, we only have ninety days to sell the house!”

Ok, I know that it won’t really be like that, as it would have to date from probate being granted at the earliest. And, unless the timeframe is really generous like 12-18 months, it makes whether or not you pay CGT at the whim of the property market in your time and location. Doer-uppers in Lumsden are probably slow to sell.

As I understand it it is two years in Australia. That would be fine. As I said, Cunliffe’s comment about 90 days, or one month or whatever, was poor. He, they, really needed a more detailed understanding of their own tax policy given that it was a *new tax policy* and a key difference between National and Labour and bound to come under scrutiny. It’s not like they don’t have a lot of models around the world they can look to, and it’s not like they weren’t already planning a CGT in their previous campaign.

Building the case for “why I very strongly considered voting for Labour, but then didn’t” is fairly easy. There’s the problem, I guess.
