  • Geoff Lealand,

I agree with you, Tony. Richard Thompson's "Dream Attic" is damn good. I would add Nick Cave to the list.

  • Simon Grigg,

After going to the other side of the world in August for two weeks in Zagreb and as we drove from the airport I saw a poster for Leonard peforming there on Sunday 29th

He's playing in Phnom Penh in a few weeks. I may go across if only to see what sort of crowd he would pull there. The idea seems odd although I'm not sure it should be these days.

Dylan plays there in a few months too, and it's an established part of the DJ and hip-hop circuit.

    Small Faces: The Autumn Stone

Miles Davis -- if you say you like all of it, you either have astoundingly catholic tastes (and a genius for repressing painful memories), or you're lying.

Hey, if you say you've heard all of it, etc.

Merlin lists 581 sessions over 46 years.

  • Jackie Clark,

Lovely, V. Thanks for that. I had always thought Small Faces was the Rod Stewart one but that, of course was the Faces, formed by the members of Small Faces when Marriott left. Just by the by, I heard that the Faces are getting together to tour again. But with Mick Hucknall as the singer.

  • Petra,

My fave band of that time, from Ol' Blighty, were The Pretty Things. Harder than Stones, man. :D

Minor spam moment, if that's okay: If you're ever in Sydney, call into Mojo Records on York St. It's part-owned and run by a friend of mine - Neville Sargent - and it's a very cool old style record store. You can even catch the odd, instore gig there. :)

  • Simon Grigg,

But with Mick Hucknall as the singer.

I weep for Ronnie Lane's spinning corpse.

[I know you like him Jackie but Rod in his prime with The Faces was quite something - Western Springs, 1974, after two hours as Rob snapped his mike stand and grandly proffered 'Thank you for your time and your money as he strutted off' is one of my most cherished rock'n'roll memories]

  • Petra,

Haha! Were you at Western Springs, Simon, when Neil Young played in the early 80s? There were several support bands - one of which was The Divinyls. They were trying to get some crowd participation, chanting "let's go! let's go!", and what seemed like 70,000 people all called back in unison, "well, go then!". lol. Good times, good times...

  • Geoff Lealand,

The Pretty Things, eh? I remember posting a memory here way back about being at the infamous New Plymouth concert, which resulted in them being hounded out of NZ (but not their fellow act Sandy Shaw).

On another matter. I guess it had to happen one day (that is, the Wallabies beating the ABs)

  • Petra,

Wow, hounded out of NZ, eh? Harsh!

I think one of them is currently seeking residency in NZ? Though I could be misinformed.

Geoff, did you ever go to any "Mantis" parties in Hamilton, back in the day?

  • Samuel Scott,

There are so many international acts coming to NZ this summer it almost makes putting on shows a bit scary. But people still seem to be coming for local acts. The Powerstation is a fantatic venue from a performers perspective, they are total pro's; great PA, good rider, good security, good pack in options. And for a punter, there isn't a bad place to watch in the building. The closest thing Wellington has is the SFBH, which only fits 500 people (but is still a good venue I think).

    Ahhh gigs.

  • webweaver,

Back in the 80s sometime, my mate Donald plucked up the courage to say "hi I really dig your music and your politics" to Paul Weller as he was sitting having a cuppa in a cafe in central London.

Mr Weller gestured at the chair opposite, Donald sat down, and they ended up talking music and politics for the next hour or so. Top bloke, according to my mate Donald.

The Jam was the first punk bank I liked (I remember listening to them on Radio Luxembourg during our summer hols in France in August 1977 in between the endless Elvis tribute songs), and they were a real standout in concert. I finally saw them from the front row at the Birmingham Odeon, 14 November 1978.

I absolutely loved The Style Council too - saw them perform at Rock City in Nottingham in (I think) 1984.

Both The Jam and The Style Council are very well-represented on my ipod - in fact I'm listening to The Style Council as I write this.

I'd love to have seen PW this time around (although, sadly, I'd be one of those old gits begging for all the old songs). I kinda like the way he's kept the same haircut all these years and only the colour has changed. V cool.

Front-runner for my favourite lyrical line of all time - from A Town Called Malice:

And a hundred lonely housewives clutch empty milk bottles to their hearts...

    Genius!

Oh, don't worry, Simon. Rod used to be my boyfriend (well, imaginary, anyway). When I was at boarding school in Wellington, (I think the year was 78?) he was playing, and of course it was an R16 show, and of course I was 14 so I couldn't go, although that didn't stop some of my housemates. I was spewing. One of them told me there was a car outside waiting and it had Rod in it and I almost died of excitement. Yes, I was that gullible.

  • Ian Dalziel,

    A call for spoiler alerts...

On another matter. I guess it had to happen one day (that is, the Wallabies beating the ABs)

Boy, am I glad I didn't see this before I got a chance to watch my recording of last night's delayed broadcast of the game, this morning...

    - any chance we can all agree on a 24 hour moratorium on posting game results here?
(or at least a banner Spoiler Alert!)
We don't all have Sky y'know...
and I carefully avoided the radio news...
    ...a close thing all round!

Perhaps Donald should've stayed in the Waikato team, and Cruden been selected, then we might've won - though, to be fair, kicking seems to have been a problem for both sides...

  • Kyle Matthews,

I want to point to my comment made a couple of weeks ago of how I thought Donald was a bad idea. As I watched Carter walk off after 60 minutes I said (to myself) "that's a mistake".

So, Paul said to us last night,
"you're a better audience than last nights crowd."
It felt like one big cuddle.
Think he likes our green too.
What a show!Happy happy joy joy. I have been fulfilled. Finally.

@Ian. Fair comment. Apologies for creating near-distress. I should have just stuck to the Waikato/Auckland game.

  • Jacqui Dunn,

Sam Scott: thanks for that Les Paul/Mary Ford. I've never seen it before, but as soon as I saw the names, in my head a song started - and voila! it was the song that intro-ed the whole thing.

As a very small child, I heard their music a lot. Evocation - powerful stuff.

  • uroskin,

I refuse to believe there are people who both like The Jam and Leonard Cohen. They must be the result of marketing execs mashing mods, rockers, punks and Cohen-ites into that sausage fest that is Babyboomer culture.
