nd that makes me wonder – who are the ignored artists of 2015 who will end up as beloved icons of NZ music in 2050.

It's really hard to say isn't it, it's such a diverse list with some obscure quality options. The Randa track 'Rangers' is pretty fantastic. That would be on my list for the year.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Silver and Gold,

That 1981 list is INSANE. How do you pick the best from that lot? It's not fair. Too good.

This years list is also fantastic but I have really concerns about two of my fave NZ acts ever have two nominations in what a feels like a year they could possibly win. Especially UMO. It really feels like their year and if only Multi-Love was nominated then I'd give them a damn good chance. I actually think Extreme Wealth & Casual Cruelty is the best song on the album though. It's magical.

I don’t understand why anyone thinks they’re *entitled* to a house in Herne Bay or Khandallah right out of School/Uni. Our parents *aspired* to that and worked their way up the ladder.

Hehe, my mum bought a 6 bedroom giant victorian mansion on the cliffs above Freeman's Bay when she was about 22. This is a young woman from a lower middle class solo parent family in south auckland. Can you imagine a young family from those circumstances buying a house at 22 of any size in any suburb in any major city in NZ now? It is not possible.

I'm not sure my parents *aspired* to anything at that point. They were creative free spirited individuals who left university in the late '60s with no debt into a society with close to full employment where buying a huge rambling victorian villa was just part of that next lentil and baby filled stage of life (I guess our inner city suburbs had been emptied by the rich moving out to new build 'burbs). I think boomers became much more aspirational through the 80s as house prices went crazy and that became the game.

...sorry to comment on something from 3 pages of comments ago, I just found that hilarious.

Also when someone is called centre/left in Germany doesn't that mean way more left than anyone in NZ politics?

Genuine question...Germany seems pretty socialist when it comes to domestic policy, and socially liberal.... just also massively zenophobic! I am basing this purely on personal experience, but my point is that making direct comparisons with the German Greens is very problematic as it's a totally different political culture.

Why are people assuming that Shaw is this wolf in sheep's clothing right wing assassin? I don't think he's said anything to warrant that. He might not have a track record yet, but that doesn't mean we can make one up.

  • Hard News: This Anzac Day,

ANZAC should be a day of respect for the people who went through hell. But it doesn't feel like that. It feels like the commercialisation of nationalism.

Unless the tone changes from one of 'didn't we do well to fight in those wars' to 'wan't that an awful chapter in our nations history, those poor bastards, let's not do this again' then I don't have any interest in partaking in the 'celebrations'.

    It makes me very uneasy.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: An unforced craft,

The story behind "Big Mac (Run Rate)" is this; we were packing our gear into a shuttle van to fly to Auckland when we got a call saying our flight had been cancelled and we might not get another one for about 4 or 5 hours.

Seeing as we were at the studio we decided to hang and play table tennis and sing silly songs. We started jamming on a few novelty reggae numbers all about the black caps. Suddenly we channeling Bob Dylan and sing KEEEP THE RUN RATE UP at the top of our lungs. Shit got real.

Luke said "we should do this, we have a few hours. We never follow through on our dumb ideas. No is the hour" etc. So we did. Immediately we knew we need some hot sax so we called Lucien Johnson, the best sax blower in town and a cricket fan to boot. Lucien jumped in a taxi, strutted in with his tenor and soprano maphones and played a ripping solo without taking off his shades or leather jacket.

Something special was happening. A rap started to flow. Schnitzel burgers from Rainbow takeaways was procured. The got mixed, the song got mastered. The song got released. Uploaded in fact, while driving to the airport to catch our new flight. The gig at the Titirangi festival was great, dinner at the Refreshment Room was fantastic. One of the best days of my life.

PS we went to a party at Indi from Doprah's parents place after the festival and were shocked to realise that we were the same generation as Doprah's parents. Sobering (though we actually really drunk) moment!

  • Hard News: Friday Music: After Kiwi,

It's time for a quota. Why don't we have a quota? It's crazy. Kiwi FM shouldn't have been such a bizarre concept.

Maybe the real reason they didn't do so well is because they have hosts who sound like nice people.

It was pretty cool swimming in the ocean with Mr Scruff playing tunes through a giant PA on the beach. Great festival. Cat Empire were terrible!

Trinity Roots were great, the new lineup with Ben Woods taking over the drums and Ed Zuccollo adding extra keys works great.
