Hard News: Asking for a Contribution, in reply to
And mine. Until I'm discovered by millions of eager rich little kids or I win Lotto. I've put a pittance into the fund. Embarrassing, but every little helps, n'est-ce pas?

Hard News: And we may never meet again ..., in reply to
Back in the day, I worked at an ad agency that used to do the Lever Hit Parade (with Ted Thorpe). Recommended for cleaning up the vinyls was warm water and a squirt of detergent. It loosens up the dirt and gets rid of the grease. Rinse, and dry with a soft cloth, following the groove.

Ah yes - UTU. And on it goes. Revenge from one side, then revenge from the other side, ad infinitum.....

Busytown: What was lost, in reply to
He's an anxious child as it is, and finds flying (or even seeing or hearing a plane or helicopter) pretty trying sometimes. I guess it's one of our jobs as parents to lower the burdens of life as slowly as possible onto the shoulders of our children, while trying to ensure that they're bearing most of the weight by the time we're no longer able to hold it for them.
Perhaps he had taken it in on a level we as adults have hardened ourselves against. Your fear soaked in by your tiny, open-to-all-influences baby?
I remember as a child realizing that my parents were frightened (the Mau Mau, iirc, but something from Africa), and that was truly a horror-filled series of moments.
EDIT: I know I've said "your fear" but I guess I really mean adult fear, as in a general feeling, which let's face it, was widespread. -

Elderly! Oh dear, Osama bin Laden was born the same year as me...
Mm. My thoughts exactly at the "elderly". Had to do some counting up (on my fingers, albeit).

With all due respect to President Obama, vengeance is not justice.
Hear hear!

Jolisa, you write so very well. Thank you for putting this down.

I imagine, although knowing nothing about how such things work really, that the reason tweets are taking forever to load is because suddenly, everything's really busy. Like, breaking news about the death of Osama Bin Laden.

OK well how's this for missing the boat? Better late than never, and it's all Emma's fault because of her blog, which has made me exceedingly guilty about contributing when I'm supposed to be doing other things.
Happy Birthday, Craig, but I thought you were a Leo!
Russell doing a curry from whole spices - now, important question Russell - exactly where do you get the best whole spices from? There's a local Indian "supermarket" with much things Indian in my neighbourhood, but I didn't see a whole spice (all ground) anywhere there.
Reading quickly through, and having missed (deliberately) watching anything to do with the you-know-what in London, reminds me of when there was some sort of royal tour through Wellington, and iirc on a Friday night. My brother was an regular in the "Duke" on the corner of Willis and Manners Sts, where all the revolutionaries and other non-conformists hung out. Apparently the bar emptied just as the cars came along, with all the patrons out on the street to see them drive past! (There's a similar sort of feel to this thread. Makes me smile.)

Muse: Hey Greg O'Connor, Krup You!, in reply to
Of course, none of us was Maori on the occasion I'm talking about. And we were all female.
I know from the experiences of two of my brothers, that in those days (and I am talking quite a long time ago now) being male and a bit of a smart mouth was always going to be a problem. Highly intelligent, mouthy young "louts" (long hair, jeans, etc) could be made to toe the line, or face consequences. It was a bad time for my mother - she was bringing the tribe up alone. She got to dread the knock on the door in the middle of the night.
