  • Jackie Clark,

I've only just realised that, having been born in '64, I'm officially a baby boomer. That's scary, considering I have no money nor any of the benefits I'm supposed to have.

  • Islander,

You & me both Jackie (and I was going 17 when you were born - and ALL my sibs had been born by then too.)

  • Jeremy Eade,

The babyboomers hold a lot of money. Now no one has ever said that money was evenly distributed in fact any study i've read basically says in the last thirty years the rich have become super rich.

Wealth is highly concentrated. They hold vasts amount of passive money in relation to the average citizen and we need that money active so citizen Jackie has some money at the retirement centre .

off topic imho the Maori Party are having a great political debate at the moment.Good to see some open air politics.

  • Joe Wylie,

Babyboomers. I really should remind myself that not everyone who uses that dismal word works in marketing, but that's pretty much where it originated.

You're probably right, Jeremy, when you claim that a certain demographic holds a disproportionate amount of wealth, but you make a hell of a generalisation. If you're out and about over the next few days you're bound to spot some rather shabby grey-haired unfortunate plodding home with a couple of shopping bags. No doubt you'll assume the the miserable old bugger has left the BMW at home and needs the exercise.

The point is I agree with you, the wealth is highly concentrated.

Look closely mind, it may well be a generation X-er prematurely aged by the stress accrued on their exorbitant student loan;). Sorry, I just can't seem to let that one go.

"shout to the top" baby , or maybe just politely ask your mp for some more money in 12 months time.

  • Jacqui Dunn,

More seriously, you could look to the soldiers who came back from active service overseas while the war was still on, and who were told they would return overseas unless their wives were pregnant.

It was hushed up because, in effect, it was a bit of a mutiny. Men and women claimed pregnancy, and the men stayed home. Apparently, there were some verryyyyy loooooonnnnngggg pregnancies.

It probably didn't account for the whole baby boom, but certainly contributed. At least, I am told it did in my family:))

    Not only your's, Jacqui!
14 of my cousins* were born in the period 1945-6 (when the fathers could've been hauled back for Pacific/Japan service...)

And, hot off the press, Wellington gets a mini-Laneway on Feb 1:

Yeasayer, Ladyhawke, Deerhunter, Beach House, Blonde Redhead and Ariel Pink's Haunted Grafitti.

  • Marcus Turner,

FWIW, here's my take on umlauts and diareses (diearesises? diaresi? diarama?)

An umlaut changes a to ae; o to oe; or u to ue. (No umlauts on i or e, and it's mostly a German thing, but some Scandinavan languages seem to use it.)

A double-dotty diaresis tells you to pronounce neighbouring vowels separately. A good example is "coöperation" (this "spelling" not seen so commonly as a few years ago). Another is "naiïve".

  • nzlemming,

Oh, come on, Marcus. Everyone knows the little dots just make your band look more metal.

Then there's the purely cosmetic umlaut.

  • Kyle Matthews,

Marcus' band isn't very metal. It might take more than umlauts I think.

Great thread and happy I read the whole thing - but when I saw the title I thought of this... Not really a surprise revival though - Peters being such a hardy quadrennial.

  • andin,

Call 'em whatever you like. But they were fucking great when I saw 'em in 1968 in the Ak Town hall, with The Who.

Who can afford, en masse, to pay that but the baby boomers?

Jeez I hate being lumped in with most of my contemporaries, just because of my birth date. Most are severely compromised individuals but they dont give a fuck, cause they got the money.
And they get too much say in what the rest of us do.

There should be a rule when you have enough money so you can afford annual holidays away in winter, and $200 concert tickets. You can just piss right off out of public affairs.

  • Geoff Lealand,

Geoff, did you ever go to any "Mantis" parties in Hamilton, back in the day?

@Petra: no, don't know about these. Must have been before we shifted to Hammy from Wellington in 1992.

Re The Pretty Things--the campaign was orchestrated by Truth, after Viv Prince rang around the stage at the New Plymouth concert, in a drunken state and waving a lit newspaper (maybe it was the Truth?) . In those innocent days, it seemed so daringly anti-social to me.
