O Gawd, I watched Prime news this evening; Suzie of the perfect diction, always a pleasure. But a sweet young thing reporting on the anniversary of our nuclear legislation couldn't even say the word properly. Aghhhhh . . . how can anybody but George Dubya make newkular out of nuclear ? . . . need self medication
-
Paula:
Oh, FFS... isn't all this "George Dubya make newkular out of nuclear" bullshit about eight years past its use-by date? It's snotty, condescending - and most of all, don't Kiwis love getting really pissy when we're on the receiving end of that kind of condescension from the likes of Paul Theroux, John Cleese or Alain De Botton?
-
And for the record, I have significantly larger issues with George Walker Bush than his diction.
-
I wonder if speech patterns display evidence of indoctrination? Could be a fruitful field to study.
-
Craig R;
What's the problem with being snotty and condescending?? Haven't most of the world's great civilisations been based on exactly that?
-
Craig you can call me snotty and condescending if thats how you think it came across. I just miss the good ol' days when most people could read, write, and speak decent English. Its one of the reasons I like Public Address. I am also really disappointed to see common errors in newsletters and notices that come home from my son's school too. Woo hoo !!

TV3 really has been slipping lately. Duncan Garner seems very bitter, and Deal or No Deal story was weird and insulting. Having watched TV1 lately though, we're still not ready to switch back.
Now that Seinfeld has started at 6PM on TV2 though, we're thinking we might try Prime news at 5:30. How much worse can it be?
-
It's snotty, condescending
Pot to kettle, come in, over.

One thing life - and a good cleavage - taught me early was males of almost any age just can't drag their eyes up
I once explained to a friend that her outfit was making me feel very impolite because it rather drew my eyes away from her face when I was talking to her; she responded that "in this outfit, if you weren't staring at my tits I'd be insulted."
-
Sue,
interesting the OZ version of the show has family and friend holding the boxes - it's boring
the US version has Robert palmer girls and some crazy guy who was once in St Elsewhere.but really maybe one of those girls will become NZs next jude dobson, didn't she start as a game show girl?

snotty, condescending
Decadent and depraved has a much better ring to it.
Don't hold back.

I once explained to a friend that her outfit was making me feel very impolite because it rather drew my eyes away from her face when I was talking to her; she responded that "in this outfit, if you weren't staring at my tits I'd be insulted."
And then she placed her hand on my knee, leant forward, and whispered breathlessly: "Roger, are you that blind? I've been trying to get your attention for years!" and with that she moved her hand further up my leg. I looked at her directly and in her eyes I finally noticed a yearning I'd never seen before. How could I have been that blind? Why had I never realised we could be more than 'just friends'?
Probably because she looked like Princess Fiona. The ogrey one, not the camerondiazzy one. It didn't matter what her t!ts looked like, I still wasn't interested. -
but really maybe one of those girls will become NZs next jude dobson, didn't she start as a game show girl?
When you say "start" there seems to be some sort of implication that she went somewhere. Isn't she the host of Family Health Diaries?
So sure, if we're looking for another person to dress up vitamin ads as 'information', the woman holding suitcase #16 might just be the one we're looking for.
And no, I wouldn't start watching Prime First At 5.30. It's hideously under-resourced and it shows, seriously. I regularly watch both 1 and 3 news (I think generally they're both very good and we are well served) but Prime News really is the poor cousin.
Or perhaps not, based on the ratings. Those 7 people can't all be wrong, can they?

Heh heh heh! <LOL> Oh Damian, you are so young! And smug. And pratly. I look forward to seeing what has become of your career in 20 years time!!
Actually, why wait? Just look around the newsroom and see what has become of the old timers. And not just the ones still there 'hacking', but the ones who 'left' to go 'freelance'. They'd be more than happy to front an infomercial, I bet.

3410,
I regularly watch both 1 and 3 news (I think generally they're both very good and we are well served) but Prime News really is the poor cousin.
IMHO,
I regularly watch both 1 and 3 news. Here's my take: 3news has gotten more and more sloppy - Duncan Garner is getting way too opinionated, for one; the graphics guy/team can neither spell nor construct decent images; almost everything by Cliff Joiner - and they've definitely loosened the reigns on their previously high editorial standards. One News (incl. Holmes / Wood / Sainsbury) has, for many years been at the front lines of the dumbing-down of NZ media and culture. It's THE leading former of opinions amongst "mainstream" New Zealand, so it's no suprise to me how ignorant and simplistic the opinions of so many people seem to be.The US has all the money in world and their "news" programmes are (with a few notable exceptions) a disaster at the moment. They've mostly all gone Foxy to a greater or lesser extent, which, I suppose, they are economically obliged to do. Nevertheless, the results for the country have been catastrophic. It's a (very) basic rule of thumb that we're about a decade behind the US in matters media, so I believe there's a lesson to be learned by New Zealand; sowing seeds of ignorance will come back to bite you, if you'll excuse the mixed metaphor. What Alejandro Jodorowsky said about Art applies to News as well: "If Art is not a medicine for society, it is a poison".
Note: Damian, I appreciate that you may not want to, or be able to, get into a debate on this. Non-response to these points won't be taken as acceptance of such. I'm just dropping an opinion; that's all. :)
PS. Prime News is a bit cheap, sure. But I'll always remember that they were the *only* one to run the story about the Weekend Herald guy allegedly threatening to expose Debbie Gerbich after she gave her police sex tape story exclusively to Sunday News, a couple of months ago. She apparently declined to play ball, NZH named her and trashed her in a story which I saw as blatant payback. I'm not saying it's related but now she's been "found dead in her home", with friends saying that she was "devastated" by having her anonymity blown. One News and 3 News both covered the initial Sunday News police sex tape story, but both ignored completely the Weekend Herald scandal which followed. Prime News First At 5:30 ran a very good story on it.
For international news via TV I'll stick with BBC, Al Jazeera, DW, and even that French one. For local news, I don't know where to go.
-
For local news, I don't know where to go
Radio New Zealand. PAS and sometimes Scoop.
You're right, local TV news is not up to it.
Maybe in the wild new world of on-line content we'll get a new model- <wishful thinking> maybe a loose conglomeration of scoop/RB style/independent journos putting out/posting a kind've random (ie when somethings happened, not the relentless filling of a predetermined slot everyday) bulletin: "hard video news" we can rss on our set-top boxes and watch- whenever </wishful thinking>. -
interesting the OZ version of the show has family and friend holding the boxes - it's boring
the US version has Robert palmer girls and some crazy guy who was once in St Elsewhere. It's not just my news I get from England. Game shows too. There's nothing showing on NZ tv that comes near QI, 8 out of 10 Cats, or the glorious Never Mind the Buzzcocks.
-
This'd be a TV show well worth watching:
I'd be happy for NZ on Air to shell out a few hundred thousand so we could see how many of 120 shat themselves as live rounds started heading past the head.
-
Why is it state owned media require a speech impediment like some sort of mark of authority?
Anyone remeber Marcus Lush, Lauwaly Mason & Simon Dallow on their happening TV News show? I swear I could see the string moving & the hand up their backsides - It was the best comedy on at the time.
Good old Lauwaly is now the science/tech reporter & she still claims ignorance on the subject - good thing she still has that mark of authority.
Having played passenger 23c for the SAS ex - they'll have fun.
Oh thanks to Mr Geoff any activity that impacts on a business to make money (except by Unions) is Terrorisim! Not tested in court yet - but it doesn't look like they intend to let it get that far.Save Happy Valley - Beware.
-

Health actually, but don't let the facts get in the way.
Look, I agree. For media hungry people like I assume most PAS readers are, the 6pm bulletin from any channel is not going to provide all the answers, and nor does the newspaper (although the newspaper is obviously able to provide a lot more in the way of features and opinion pieces - these are a helluva lot easier to put together in print form than on telly - consider the time/money in writing a decent feature vs putting together a doco).
Thanks to our good friend the Interweb, we're now able to get news from a variety of sources, daily opinion from the best in the game, streamed overseas shows, pretty much whatever we want. But the daily papers and the 6pm news provides most people with most of what they want most of the time. And in a commercial model, that's how it's going to be.
I'm not saying we should accept crap journalism when we see it, but as I once said to an older guy I knew who slagged off (youth news/current affairs show and my first job at TVNZ) Flipside, perhaps you're just not the target audience. Or perhaps we should accept that we need to supplement the meat and potatoes of the daily news with our other sources, as we already obviously do.
3410 In 20 years time? I'll undoubtedly have sold out to some high paying PR/Comms job. Would you expect any less?
-

MPs used as live SAS targets

Kyle you rock, lets get into filming now, man thats hot property, so many people would watch it but I guess itd have to be HDT because of the tomatoes thrown at the screen an stuff.
Does anyone have any goss on the competition the herald is running for the photographer that gets the worst photo of Helen? -
Talking of emotional overlays, i feel a strong case of smug swelling in the back of my head after reading all this, having abandoned both news shows a few years back. Woot for feeling smug on a Saturday.
I tried filling this void with BBC/Sky News/CNN/Fox(lol), but that didn't work either, although I must commend Fox as a great entertainment resource. O'Rielly is the best kind of muppet.
-
OK, it’s not really a speech impediment as such but what’s with the sign-off for TV1 sports reporter Tuapalooooooooooa Evert-Charlton?
Does he think he’s a boxing commentator or something?
-
LegBreak
I suspect it might be his family/cultural expression - like a moto. Wouldn't you want to spice up Evert-Charlton without Pims that is?Damian
At the time I was the tgt market - & I was attacking their lack of style. TVNZ infamously celebrated Lauwalys continued ignorance in their look/laugh at me ad campaign last year.Is it more that the media draws those with speech impediments to it?
-
I take your points about the 'dumbing down' of 3 News. Last night they used the term 'Freak Accident' to describe the death of a 3 y.o. who had a gate fall on him. It was clear from the actual report that there was a problem with the gate, that that problem had been identified, and yet nothing had been done to rectify the problem. Tragic yes, but hardly a freak accident.
Will Helen Clark be attending the funeral, and who will she blame for the tragedy?
