  • Hadyn Green,

there should be a BDSM dungeon in the basement of every major corporation in nz

There is a gym in the basement of the State Service Commission that could be easily converted...

  • Riddley Walker,

    Heather
i don't know of any list of those against, opponents seem to only quote the mythical and amorphous 'moral majority of right thinking nzers'. a browse of kiwiblog, the Union of Failures, or the musings of Leighton Smith might turn up something concrete - but i doubt it.

maybe Dads4Justice will tell us which organizations that have a genuine interest in children's wellbeing are actually opposed?

  • Che Tibby,

  • the E,

it was from the collection, 'Haunted'.

Right... his book "Choke" would also be entirely relevant in this context and is a great read as well.

"Time Out" just isn't kinky. Although those given the more old fashioned, claustraphobic "time out" (such as the cupboard under the stairs) could well become the type in adult life that you'd accidentally stumble across frotting a mop in the cleaning cupboard.

This could partly explain why B&D venues are invariably set up like dungeons and basements...

  • Riddley Walker,

    i wager 500:1 they are.
spare the rod and spoil the child my son - maybe that's what all those convicted priests thought they were doing, by not sparing the spearing they were actually saving?

  • the E,

which organizations that have a genuine interest in children's wellbeing are actually opposed?

Light years ago in this debate (like, a couple of weeks) i'm sure i heard Christine Rankin speak out on National Radio strongly against the bill amendment.

I just googled & she would have been representing Light One Life http://www.lightonelife.org.nz/know-more.php, which concerns child welfare.

The web site is just one page that I can tell, & does not say one specific thing about how this organisation proposes to "establish a movement of change", or what that change would be about.

You have to presume from the web site that they do want to prevent child abuse and neglect - but they don't actually say that, or how.

But I'm pretty sure she was against the amendment.

    Go figure.

  • Ben Austin,

The whole debate and how it has unfolded would be an interesting topic to look at for a political studies thesis. It seems like the ideal issue for which to build up a wider debate about cultural values, in a way that many other similar issues are not. Unlike abortion, prostition, homosexual rights, and the like smacking is an issue which a majority of people will feel intimately involved in, given that it involves child raising.

Someone go write something interesting on this please.

given that it involves child raising

Erm, maybe given that we were all children once?

  • Ben Austin,

    that too merc.

I'm just interested to find out how much strategising/planning goes on in some circles about 'wedge issues', 'culture war battles' and the like, and if they see something like the "anti smacking bill" and wet themselves in excitement as to where it might lead. It seems to me that we have people in this country that hope desperately for a wider debate on the morality of our society. You know, the difference between fighting an election based on solid issues versus "I don't care how he/she will cut taxes, what is their views on abortion/gun control/sanctity of marriage".

Maybe I'm being paranoid about their paranoia, but hey, its lunchtime and I'm hungry.

  • Che Tibby,

jesus ben... would you bring a child into the world knowing it'll be unloved?! would you?? would you?!

then why make stupid and completely insane comments like

would be an interesting topic to look at for a political studies thesis

    ....

do you know how many of things are sitting out there on shelves right now feeling unloved and unread?

so before you go encouraging some bright-eyed and bushy-tailed student from bringing another one of these things into the world, how about doing the right thing.

adopt a thesis and take it home first. read it, and make it feel welcome.

    that would be real compassion.

    peace out.

Yeah but university libraries are homes of Sin and Distraction Che, if I disappear into their doors in search of Knowledge and Compassion, who knows what foul monster wearing my body shall be spat out of their ravening maw, no doubt armed with the twin weapons of Sophistry and Malice.

  • Lyndon Hood,

Christine Rankin would have been representing "For the Sake of Our Children" (umbrella group). Just before one PR opposing the bill I recall she'd put out another urging the Govt to do "something, anything" about our child abuse record.

Other organisations putting out PR against include Family Integrity, Family First (the 'special needs children escpecially need beating' guy) and sundry individuals. Please note in counting these that, if I were compiling a similar list (by glancing at Scoop coverage) for the pro lobby it would be shorter than Riddley Walker's. But longer than three.

I'm sorry for flogging the serious arguments, Damian. I've been a bad, bad boy.

I always wondered what happened to finished theses...

The only thesis I've ever seen circulated widely was ages ago (mid 80s perhaps) and was about binge drinking by Otago scarfies.

    It was hilarious.
