  • Lilith __,

Well, it didn’t take long for some people to suspect who I am behind this pseudonym

I’m pretty sure Max is actually Willy Wonka.

lift whatever painted veil I have left and post under my own name

    hoping that's indirect enough..

Same tone of general trollery, though

Really? Like Russell I always saw a clear difference. Miss all sorts of other things, but.

  • Russell Brown,

Which…er, well, my PAS presence was established long before I even applied, and I don’t think I’ve got more obscene. Depending upon one’s definition of obscene.

I’m fortunate enough to have established a, um, brand through having been writing frankly under my own name since forever. I’m expected to be that guy. It has helped that I owe no great fealty to any institution and have not generally had proper employers to embarrass.

Really? Utterly different prose style and MOs. But I suppose I had to interact directly with both of them.

I didn't spend more than about 10 mins reading the copyright thread, where I understand lil'P blew a lot of his social capital. It's a big hole in my PAS fluency.

No, that was robbery and to a lesser extent pollywog -- both of whose real names I know. lil' P may be at Auckland University, but I'm not sure. He is much stranger and a lot more angry.

So it turns it okay do it with two handles at the same time. As long as everyone involved meaningfully consents.

Yeah, see, I did find robbery and robbie very similar in their trollish style. Hope it's not something in the name..

I wouldn't want everyone doing it, though. It could get messy and confusing.

Quite. I like real names. Though I drop my surname most places on the web, and pseudonym entirely in a few - different spaces, different things, different Google results.

  • Jackie Clark,

Pseudonyms are an interesting thing. I used to be completely against them, if only because I frequented some very nasty online communities where people really did hide behind them, whilst attacking other people, quite viciously, and spreading scurrilousness. This community has restored my faith in that people here generally behave very well, whether they are posting under their birth name or not. And I do understand that people don't want to be googled under their "real" names. Makes perfect sense to me. The only thing vaguely psuedonymous about my name, of course, is that my surname is my birth one. I have a rather distinctive married last name - there aren't many of us in NZ - and it's the name that professionally I'm known as. Which is why I don't use it online, because I am, you know, a kindergarten teacher. And eyes are everywhere. Apart from that, though, everyone else knows me as Jackie Clark - even my mother, as I think I have said before, took years to use my married name. She even used to write cheques to me as JC. Very bad for the banking people. And yes, my husband calls me Jackie Clark. And when I ring my friends, they say "Jackie Clark!" I would be no good as a spy.

  • Carol Stewart,

As long as your online presence is consistent, coherent, and accountable – who cares whether the label is your legal name, your porn star name, or a keysmash?

Well, maybe, but being accountable as a pseudonym is not the same thing as being accountable IRL.
But I shoud add that I totally accept the point that people have valid reasons for doing so.

  • Jackie Clark,

I also would like to add that I think a sex thread - a pseudonymous one - is a perfectly fine idea. I like to hear about peoples' experiences, and being someone who has met many on here and would like to meet more, I would rather that people felt safe, instead of feeling like they were putting themselves/livelihoods etc on the line. It can be a very scary thing sharing in a public forum, and we mustn't forget that there are a lot of people who lurk here, without ever commenting.
