Another Herald story, this time from Brian Rudman on the Nats' hacking of Labour's computers - It's only dirty politics when someone else does it. Once again the comments are open.

The 'Simon Lusk's Plan' chapter in the book -- which has barely been reported -- states that there are MPs who are in Parliament principally because they were clients of Lusk, who worked with Slater to deter and even destroy their opponents in electorate selection races. Good people were really hurt.
In all the interviews over the last few days, has anyone asked John Key if he was aware Slater and Lusk successfully manipulated candidate selections in his party, and what he plans to do to prevent that happening again in the future?
I know it's not the worst thing in the book, but it seems so insidious and potentially damanging to the NZ political landscape in the long-run. Also, it's just gross.

And he points out that Slater took credit card numbers too .... that's got to resonate with the Nat's "ordinary Mums and Dads"
Of course it wasn't just Slater who got that information, so did the Nat's man on the Beehive's 9th floor

I've been surprised no one has mentioned it, because it's really significant -- and it will be the subject of considerable internal discussion in National.

I sense a bit of a conspiracy theory building about the Herald comments. As far as I can tell after a scout around their site, comments only seem to be open on “opinion” pieces rather than “news” pieces.
I’m not sure if this is a recent change or not. It doesn’t appear to me that it’s solely about stifling debate on this “left-wing conspiracy theory”.
Update: I emailed the Herald to ask. The response is "Hi Mikey, we don’t allow comments on nzherald.co.nz news articles. That’s a long-standing policy. Our regional websites do allow comments on most stories."

Campbell Live picked this up last night showing a huge hole in the treasury forecast because the EQC has not reported its financial position. If the EQC shortfall is taken into account it seems to leave an enormous budget defect that the next government will have to deal with if they want to settle Christchurch earthquake claims before 2016. It would kind of take the shine off Bill English's "Look we're good economic managers, here's our surplus and if you're all good we might give you a tax cut" speeches.

Considering his overt, long-standing backing of the Nats, Mike Hosking's e-mails in recent years' would make interesting reading too, given recent revelations.

I'd say the disabling of comments was a technical thing rather than a political thing.

The other thing that takes the shine off that claim is the fact that government debt has skyrocketed during these two terms of National government. It's gone from about $10 billion to over $60 billion (35% of GDP). Far lower debt levels (27% of GDP) were enough for the Abbott government to declare a "debt crisis" and use it to justify a draconian budget, though of course all and sundry called BS on that.

So now that Slater's admitted others often write blogs that he post's under his name, will he stand by his Helen Clark Painting tanty?
And in a total aside I've been quite bemused today due to this blog bunfight that I am no longer able to tweet about media muppetry (a forever hot button for me) without being accused of political partisanship *sigh*, total wrong end of the stick pal.....
