  • 3410,

And probably hastened his own political demise.

    So, not completely unproductive then?

  • Gareth Ward,

Given there's a few Green members around these traps, I'll ask the question I just put on Danyl's blog - when the Maori Party are making iwi-based deals to ram through an awful awful excuse for an ETS, why isn't Metiria Turei (sp?) all over coverage of this? She strikes me as the natural credible opposition voice given her work on Maori and environmental issues as well as being the leader of a Parliamentary Party?
    Yet I've seen nothing?

  • Craig Ranapia,

    Gareth Ward:

I suspect Turei would say 1) we are, and 2) we don't have a lot of influence over media outlets that considered Goff's Grey Power play date worthy of saturation coverage.

I've also had it suggested to me by a pretty well-connected Green activist (off the record, sorry) that Goff's made it that much harder for the Greens to get MSM coverage of that "credible opposition" without giving legs to Goff's race-baiting mouth fart. Not a pleasant dilemma to have to work through.

  • Gareth Ward,

that much harder for the Greens to get MSM coverage

I suspected it was something like this, but in a more general sense. They've had seemingly ZERO influence on the MSM discussion over this ETS at all - and they're the GREENS! Seems the MSM just isn't interested in them at all anymore.
Even still, go to the Greens website and there is no clear statement about this stuff that immediately grabs.

I just want a working Opposition man, is it so much to ask? =)

  • Craig Ranapia,

Meanwhile, it's only fair to note that 'Eddie' at The Standard has just weighed in, and it's not quite as egregiously hacky as I expected.

However, looking at the entirely predictable comments something rather disturbing comes clear. In Phil's (Nation)Hood, he really is a uniter not a divider. What a shame, however, that he's uniting the sewers of the Sub-Standard Left and the Kiwibog Right.

    Thanks for that, Phil...

  • 3410,

Goff’s speech was stupid and wrong on so many levels. We deserve better than this. - The Standard

Craig, you call that "not quite as egregiously hacky as I expected"? There's just no pleasing you.

  • George Darroch,

Well, apart from this huge qualification of the criticism.

But there’s no demonisation of Maori, no denial of their existence as a people, no attempt to paint them as a grasping minority with a ‘birthright to the upper hand’, accuse them or special privileges or write them out of our legislation and our institutions. The speech itself is certainly not racist – Brash’s was.

In that thread I list all the ways in which it actually does most of those things.

What George said. Hell, more "buts" in there than a booty call at Flava Flav's house, but I'll give Eddie full credit for not simply dismissing any criticism as a media beat-up. Grant Robertson tried that on over at Red Alert, but the poor lamb's heart really wasn't in it.

  • Lyndon Hood,

I've just had a look on the Greens site to confirm my impression and it looks like in the last 3 weeks they put out 3 release about the ETS. I'm told some of the speeches were quite good, but in the circumstances I would call that not many press releases.

  • Just thinking,

Judging from Shane Jones comments in Parliment.

His issue of division is about a division between Maoridom rather than Maori & Pakeha.

Jones view is rather more nuanced than Goffs.

Jones was hating on Ngai Tahu, Goff was hating on Maori.

  • andrew clive,

The Maori Party have the agenda of separatism , MP Shane Jones said that recently in the Herald.

Why should Maori be exempt from the ETS? That is just plain racist.
Key is swayed once again by a minority .

Once again its evident here on PA most bloggers are radical minority vocalists & along with mainstream media aren't interested in consensus.

They don't seem to have the energy that they had a few years ago. I also question a lot of their media and electoral strategy.

I don't have much respect for the NZ media (as I regularly express), but even I won't go so far as to blame everything on them.

It looks like Goff's strategy is working.

So you're taking the statements of an Opposition politician as an indication of the position of a political party in government? Awesome, I guess that means I can say that the National Party is run by corporate whores and jackbooted thugs, since that's what other people have called them in the past.

Selected iwi got a good deal because the Nats needed to make a deal. It's a good distraction.

The former chairman of the Waitangi Fisheries Commission (can't get much more iwi elitist than that) is a hypocritical douche-nozzle?

  • dubmugga,

You should see what happens when you try to talk sincerely about the consequences of child hood sexual abuse, as I have attempted to do

OK i'll bite...what happens.. being ignored ? to be honest, i dont think here is the place to seek redemption and forgiveness :p

But radical, is not in my opinion, what brings about cultural change. Its the cooperation that the academic tradition supplies.

what brings about cultural change is adaptation by natural selection, survival of the fittest culture. sometime in the not too distant future we'll all be polynized and yes, partially thanks to deconstructing institutionalised racism within the education sector

sadly racialism still seems a bit too entrenched in the political sector. maybe hiphop can be the unifying cultural catalyst to speed up change there? i mean even young asians love teh hippity hop:)

  • andrew clive,

Well why is on this site their is very little in the way of diverse opinion especially with regard to SST , anti smacking legislation , Maori Party etc?

Everyone here appears to be anti SST, pro anti smacking bill, anti referendum, anti democracy march, pro Maori party.

Why is it this blog seems habituated by left wing radicals out of sync with the rest of society in general ?

You appear astonded that anyone would dare to have a contrary opinion to your own. I thought you were for democracy...

Hey, if you have something useful to say about SST / anti-smacking / referendum / whatever then why not just put your point of view across like everyone else, instead of being such a little baby about it?

Hi Andrew, I'm in need of a few poorly thought out half baked clichés....can you point me in the direction of the site you rented yours from?
