last time I went to the town hall I was searched - they were after my chewing gum and duly confiscated it... though that which was in my mouth was allowed into the venue which kinda defeats the purpose I guess.
Heavy handed paranoid rubbish, what do they think contemporary music lovers are?
Sweet a new Royals remix... getting quite the collection now

Jazzysport has put out some great stuff... Cian at Conch put me onto them. Re Skeptics, Chris Matthews recalled that morning at Snailclamps in his 1990 RipItUp obit for David... http://dubdotdash.blogspot.co.nz/2012/09/david-dath.html

All council facilities seem to be run by evangelist Christians on meth. The end.
Not quite the end. What is with the absurd "land levy"? Is for the hole they have to dig to put all the contraband in?

Sometimes it's all perfectly sensible. Other times ... Bob tells me the chewing-gum search was at the Lawrence Arabia show, an event so wild and dangerous that it had cabaret seating.
Whether they have their security freakout or not just seems completely random.

yep - and its a shame as the experience you have as you enter a venue can make or break your mood for the evening
Is it too much to ask for people to greet you with a smile as you enter having paid for the privilege - as for the chewing gum, I get their fear the building might be damaged... for like the custodians I too love our town hall and would be very angry to find it harmed in any way
I missed the Skeptics doco screening - anyone know if there will be a DVD? So want one for the collection, one of my all time fave bands!

Matthew Bannister's Evolver album, which I raved about last week, is now available for online purchase from Powertool Records.
And I've got my copy from the nice folks at Powertool -and I agree it's pretty damn good - even if the opening to Dr Robert sounds like the Sesame St theme!. Love the way he turns the songs inside out, starting with Taxman. If George were still with us, I think he'd dig it. Hope McCartney and Starr get to hear this. It's often not until you hear the first lyrics of many of the tracks that you realise it's actually a Beatles song. A neat rendition of an epic recording.

It does seem like security could do with going to some courses on hospitality. I bet the people actually hosting would be pissed off to know their efforts are ruined by security.

+2 on the Jazzysport tip!

Oh, and speaking of James Blake, how about a fab funk version of The Wilhelm Scream from mean record label Tru Thoughts?

I posted the link to this post to Face. From Dean Cornish in the comments:
The woman on the door asked if I 'have a gun or anything like that'
They really have no idea what they're doing there.

Ah. Someone was telling me about this but couldn’t remember the artist. Thanks!
Edit: And I was about to “Cool! It’s available on the iTunes Store!”
But: “The item you’ve requested is not currently available in the New Zealand Store, but it is available in the Australian Store. Click Change Store to view this item.”
I guess I just have to find another means, then.
Edit 2: Here.

et tu, brutes...
I'm over The Edge...
...and here was me expecting
an excoriation of U2,
(a Bono contention, even)
or a radio station rark up at least! But, nah, just some fulmination
about The Searchers!
;- )</coat check, door>

It's on Beatport and I presume on Juno as well.

There's a lotta dodginess around securitah
I don't think it ever gets as bad here as many cities overseas, where security firms are all gang-based, and doormen and clubs get attacked in turf wars (for the lucrative drug dealing mostly).
But I have heard of various scams, such as money being laundered: club manager gets a big bag of money, banks it as takings, pays it out to a security company. That sort of thing...

That and the chewing gum incident make it sound like the Edge's security policy has been written by a bunch of parents from rural Southland who have never been to Auckland but have heard about what goes on there and are determined to put a stop to it.

Stunning collection this week. Thanks Russell!

The Skeptics film screening was the most glorious film festival experience since I saw Muriel's Wedding at a matinee session in 1994, with a mostly middle-aged lady audience who laughed and laughed and laughed.
Sheen of Gold was played nice and loud, and the documentary itself wasn't afraid to let whole songs play in their entirety, rather than using the music as a background. It was great seeing old music videos, especially ones other than the notorious "A.F.F.C.O." There were so many wonderful moments in the film, goosebumps galore and moments where I kept realising I was feeling so happy. But mainly it was great to see the film in an audience with a whole lot of other Skeptics fans, like a secret society of people who have discovered one of the greatest bands in the world.

Guys! This is a private track so I couldn't embed it, but I think I can just link you to the download page:
Jestofunk - Say It Again (Karim Play It Again Edit)
Super funky house music!

That David D'Ath vision you recounted is something I remember David for too. When I slept on the floor at Snail Clamps I woke to see David hanging upside down from a rail attached by large ski boots with big eye hooks fitted into the soles. Serendipitously, my "Tripping USA" photo/audio show was on at Manawatu Art Gallery at the time, and all of the AXEMEN happened to be at the opening. So nek minit we were invited as "guests of honour" for the closing night wild party at Snail Clamps. That was an experience I'll never forget for scaling new heights in incendiary audio madness! Actually found a cassette of that the other day.

Perhaps security were concerned that self-harm utensils might find there way into the venue. That's how I might react if I found myself having to listen to a full James Blake set.

It might also be said that Bailter Space doesn’t quite feel like Bailter Space without his thunderous presence.
Shy, gentle, and mighty: I reckon John put the guts into the Gordons, as well as Bailter Space. Didn’t know he did a stint with the Skeptics- must check that out.
Remarkable guitarist, as well as playing bass. My memory of the Gordons is mostly two guitars and drums, no bass, and it sounded like sixteen walls of sound colliding at high speed :) </HalvorsenFanclubRaver> -
off the wall dept…
I am still attempting to put my silverfish on a diet, so these just have to go (to a good home)… -

I agree with Robyn. The crowd really made the Skeptics movie - it did feel like being part of a secret society. We really felt it when we went to an inner city pub afterwards - the folks there were watching the rugby (which usually I'm not averse to), but our little black-wearing, Skeptics-bamboozled clique definitely didn't feel at home. We beat a retreat to Beer Brothers - which is great - and found a whole bunch more of our tribe there. Met the director too!
I've had the chewing gum experience at the Town Hall too, prior to the Pavement show, pretty insulting really.

I knew, but hadn't realised what a strong component of the band's sound his "horror-movie guitar" (as Nick Roughan puts it in the film) was.
