  • Hard News: Friday Music: Deep cuts from Aotearoa,

That Voodoo Lady has turned up previously on a Dalvanius best of CD compilation, and also the Poi-e soundtrack (the long version too). Was on a cool Oz comp last year on double vinyl called Back On The Streets Again, digging thru the Festival vaults. Nice work, Alan P and John B. Look forward to getting it. Vol 2 please

    Thanks for that!

Tourettes is doing something pretty wild for Artweek…

"Josh Solomon from Two Hands Tattoo has an exhibition, Are You Really Here, on all this week at 44 Courthouse Lane just up from the High St Square, as part of Artweek Auckland.

On Weds at 8pm he’s going to tattoo some of the art from our book Party Tricks and Boring Secrets on me while I read poems from the book.

Is it going to suck for me? yes. Will the poems sound good through gritted teeth? probably not, but it will be a spectacle and everyone loves one of those.”

About that 1965 Loxene Gold Disc - I sat next to Billy Kristian and his wife at the music awards last year, had a lovely chat, about when he produced Herbs, played trombone in a band in the middle east in the 70s... fascinating gent.

He told me about when Ray Columbus and the Invaders were inducted into the NZ Music Hall of Fame back in 2009, Ray finally let Billy have the Loxene Gold Disc, and Ray took home the Hall of fame trophy.

Billy rang up Dave Russell in Sydney (the other surviving member of the Invaders) and told him Ray had finally let him have the Loxene after 44 years. Dave asked “When do I get it?” Billy replied, “In 44 years”.

cheers for the link,. Here’s a great story by Murray Cammick that I dug out from Real Groove, 2001. An interview with Larry Morris of Larrys Rebels, about how he quit the band when their managers didn't book them any accommodation after a gig in Whitianga, and also the time he threw an apple at Howard Morrison on a live televised show and got banned from TV. http://dubdotdash.blogspot.co.nz/2015/04/larrys-rebels-no-sleep-til-whitianga.html

  • Hard News: Friday Music: A Strange Road, in reply to Russell Brown,

I saw Darren Watson mention on his FB page that he'd had a phone conversation with the Electoral Commission. who had told him they believed it crossed the line into being a political advertisement. The Electoral Commission also told Access Radio to stop playing it as it may be a contravention of the act. Seems the Electoral Commission is awfully confused over what it has or hasn't done.

Also, he posted this in reaction to RNZ's report on Planet Key, yesterday : "Unfortunately it seems Radio NZ National got rather the wrong end of the stick when they said we were going to 'bow to the Electoral Commission' by agreeing to put our names and addresses on the song and video as 'promoter statements'. I did not at any stage say that to the reporter nor I believe did I intimate that. For the record we will definitely NOT be doing that."

No played at the NZ showcase at SXSW last year. Brad Carter's previous LA band, Pistol Youth, scored around $70k of NZOA funding.

Hi Russell, thanks for mentioning my doco. That wasnt the first public screening tho - it was broadcast on Max TV and Triangle TV in 1996, and also screened at the Wellington Fringe Film Festival that year. So, lets say first public screening this century
