Definitely good Dunners PR in this thread. :-)

Just while we're all out swimming and frolicking, perhaps it's a good idea to refresh our memories about how drowning doesn't look like drowning - it can happen silently and without others noticing, until it's too late.
One way to be sure? Ask them, “Are you alright?” If they can answer at all – they probably are. If they return a blank stare, you may have less than 30 seconds to get to them. And parents – children playing in the water make noise. When they get quiet, you get to them and find out why.

You’re right: I may take notice of beloved’s obsession with Otago property porn in the ODT (I've always wanted to nail those two concepts together: ODT and nefarious ways).

The strangely straight dark patches on the clouds – could that actually be shadows from the earth?
I'd veer towards that kind of anticrepuscular effect

If it's that effect it would be the crepuscular one, surely - this was in the direction of the Sun. But yes, that's highly plausible, of course rays seen from below will appear straight. Thanks Ian.
ETA: So it's "technically" shadows from the earth, if you count clouds as being from the earth :-)

<Doh!>
yes...
I've only ever seen that anticrepuscular effect once - from the roof of the Alice's Video building (where the Ronnie van Hout figure is now) it was pretty amazing to see something so 'constructed' and graphic looking in the sky... -
