  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

SJ - I always felt a defining moment in my maturation was the transition from identifying with Bart to identifying with Homer.

I was indentifying with Barney for a while there.

RB - "Bureaucrats" is simply egregious, meaningless spin

Agreed we now have outsourced incompetence as well. I think it was 45 schools in and around Christchurch that didn't pay some of the teachers for the 1st month - 6 weeks of this year.

  • Southerly: Even More Southerly,

Riverton has a 1km surf break & a history the predates 1835 by quite a few hundred years.

It has a great place to eat where there are heaps of those award plates on the walls.

I'ld not fish or swim in the river because of the dairying.
Southlands Dairy Ind alone produces the same amount of effluent as 10Million People.

At a guess your house is in Avonside or at least east of the square. That means it is less than 5 meters above sea level.
No rush but I'ld sell at some stage - CHCH has no Climate Change Plan. 1/2 the city is going to drown.

  • Hard News: Leaving the bunker,

Joseph Stiglitz's said something like the USA pay $500K for their troops who died in action.

Is that a calculated loss of their life or a payment to the family after their death?

Off topic but have I got it right that John Banks has been using ANTEDILUVIAN in his rants on lately?

As far as I can find out means something about being out of date - pre the Great Flood of Biblical times?

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

When I was younger 'your mother' were fighting word & not a clip around the ear either.

If it was big talk or a joke the guys I knew didn't take it that way at all.

And back to landlines - we often don't klnow our neighbours, people in our communities are isolate our family friends are scattered and for good health/socialisation a phone is essential in NZ.

Telecom need to be held accountable for not providing the Public Share. A simple pre-pay no-frims local landline that can't accept collect calls (often a burden in some societies) & can't make them either.

Who really needs caller ID? - How about you pick up the phone & say Hello?

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

    Brilliant stuff from Orcon.

The interrnets is quickly becoming essential, but the phoneline is essential and woefully provisioned by Telecom for the poorest in our community.

The Public Share in Telecom shud come in for the least advantaged amoung us.

Currently Reconnects (?) offers $99 a month prepay landline.

This must be able to be offered at a lower rate by Telecom and rightly would be covered by the Public Share provision.

  • Hard News: What I'd really like to know,

Jim - I'm sceptical about our ability to use technological "advances" to help meet our obligations to Kyoto.

The N product is at best a delay on pollution, but not a solution. It is the intensification and suitablility of the land being used where true solutions lie.

The Carbon Sinks for example borrow directly from the plot of John Travoltas movie "Broken Arrow" where a Nuke explodes in a Copper Mine and therefore seals in the radiation. Both require great leaps of faith and are not plausible.
