I like you when you're roused, David.

Half the readers added an 'a' there.

David is currently way more uncomfortable than any little hug ever made him.

  • Hard News: Morning in Auckland,

Having looking through the list of previous winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, some of the ones you know are the more controversial ones.

    Yasar Arafat for example.

Ms Lal, whose father is a Fiji Indian and mother a New Zealander

Ooh that is interesting. I wonder if her father is a New Zealander of Fijian Indian ethnicity? Or if he's actually a Fijian.

Mike, David's proposal isn't necessarily cutting publishers out, though obviously that would be an option. It's working to cut out retailers from as many of the book sales as possible, and return that margin to the author. Publishers would presumably get the same amount of money than at present, possibly more if more books were sold.

While we're on media making connections with the topic of the moment, Lynne Pope wrote an eloquent post yesterday about her own experience with the collection in question, in response to the Te Papa story.

I'm surprised no one (that I've seen) has made the connection with Virgin Mary in a condom, in which another spirtual belief was (according to quite a few followers of those beliefs) not treated with respect. Slightly different circumstances in that the art work in that instance wasn't given to the Museum by the church with instructions attached.

Personally I'm happy with the directive that went out. I need to think about whether Te Papa is always consistent though.

And how can we get these sort of lies exposed to a wider audience?

Darren Hughes is the Labour spokesperson for transport. Make sure he has the information for a start. Or Keith Locke who is the Green equivalent.

but yes, indeedy, the usual formula is 'trade terms for personal use but not for resale."

This does seem strange. What David is essentially proposing is that the costs and income of distribution (and selling) be shifted onto the author, with the assistance of the web site.

Surely the trade price to the author is the price that the publisher gets back from the retailer? It's just a different system of distribution, why wouldn't the publisher be happy?

It seems there are some people disappointed that the Government has not congratulated the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize - basically kowtowing to China. I don't see how our kowtowing to India by officially apologising for something over which the Government has (and should have) no control is all that different.

I don't see an equivalence. Just because both involved 'kowtowing' doesn't make them equivalent.

It's not. I was thinking more of the comments about the Governor-General. Probably not an idea either, but closer than what Keith said.

Actually I agree with Graeme in that "the GG [and by inference, people who look like him] isn't a New Zealander" is part of the marketplace of ideas and "Paul Henry is a cunt" isn't.

There clearly is no guarantee of quality in the marketplace of ideas - it's factually and morally wrong. But certainly an idea.

If we really start holding advertisers to account for the content of programmes or channels on which their ads appear, then they will be more circumspect about placing ads, and some voices may be lost.

The counter-argument is that these businesses probably did quite well out of being associated with Henry and his somewhat nasty success.

Having benefitted from it previously, it would seem strange not to pay the price once he finally went too far for enough people.

I have to think more about whether that's bad for free speech.
