  • Ross Mason, in reply to David Haywood,

Here I’m not sure I entirely agree with the you…

    This is FUN!

The Arlngton on the stamp bears the same "flicks and shapes" as other letters in other places. See the way the "ton" in Alington on the stamp is written. The horizontal line that is the "t" cross. This is the same style as "Arlington" in the rest of the note. QED the same person.

As for "the sum of twenty pounds". An even closer look suggests that this might have been written by Holland!! Check the "n". Subtle differences to the body of the letter. But consistent with Hollands "n" on his name - and the "n" in Pounds. The "s" are completely different too. Especially the ones at the start of words. The "f" is different. The "d" does not have that little left flick at the top either. Nope. IMHO, Different person.

I'll concede that a third person is there but I offer Holland as the third person who wrote the twenty pounds bit. The strokes look suspiciously the same, the angle of the writing.

  • Ross Mason, in reply to Brent Jackson,

The additional JP was definitely written by a different hand than the crossed out JP.

The loops in the "J" and the "P" would be hard to separate them as two different ones. I'll go with my idea still. The big "dots" are a giveaway as well I think. Check the dot in "Geo." in Coleman's signature. Especially the little hook to them.

  • David Haywood, in reply to Dianne Mitchell,

Her birth parents are recorded as”
George Hlidebrand Alington and Eliza Ann WINTER nee Good.

so have George and the vicar’s wife had a bit of a fling and Eileen the result?

Crikey! Well done, Dianne! You deserve the Nobel Prize for Geneology -- I shall put forward your name immediately!

And darn -- on the subject of vicars I now have to go and remove my son and another child from school for 'science club' (today: dismantling our piano!). Both children are science-y and ask too many questions to be allowed in the Bible Class, which the local school runs in the last school hour on Tuesdays. Oh, to have children who would just keep their mouths shut and not interrogate the nice lady from the church.

Will be back to contribute to this thread later tonight...

  • Brent Jackson, in reply to Ross Mason,

Yeah, I can see that the P's shapes are quite similar, but the bottom of the J's are quite different. The dot in the signature and the added JP are similar (almost commas), as opposed to the dots in the original JP (though this may just be due to differing writing speed).

But really this is all of minor consequence, compared to the identification of the adopted child, and her biological parents. Good sleuthing all around.

  • Dianne Mitchell,

Not sure where I got that Eliza Ann's husband was a vicar. From all accounts he was a very nasty piece of work.
Eliza Ann Winter (sorry maiden name WEBB, not Good as stated above) died on 14 Oct 1942 in ChCh. Interesting that her former husband, William Winter died on the very next day.
She married a Fred Kennnard in 1898.

Wow (again)! And note that it's the same solicitor as shown on the receipt for payment to the adopted child's mother (now known to be Eliza Ann Winter).

  • Dianne Mitchell,

Eliza Ann and William Winter had 5 other children…all now deceased.

Eileen and her hubby Fred Mcreanor are buried at Burwood Cemetery, CHCH. Fred died in 1939.
Their son Frederick George Coleman McCreanor (known as George) died in 2004. Born 1932.
The owner of the Tree on Ancestry is a McCreanor descendant who lives in CHCH.

  • Hebe,

This is great! I wonder if the original letter was written from a standard "how to give away a child" template and the twenty-pound rider was added at the last minute to help Eliza support her family.

If she had already hd five with the bad bolter William, she could well have found the last illegitimate child too much to cope with, so Alington helped sort it all out before he married?

  • Dianne Mitchell,

Oh dear...seem that Eliza Ann's family with William Winter are totally unaware of Eileen's existence
    This from the Ancestry Tree
"If it's possible I'd like more information on how this relationship was decided upon by the creator of this family tree. The existence of Eileen is unknown in my family, I am a great granddaughter of Eliza Ann WINTER. I note from my search on Ancestry.com that there is another Eliza Winter who lived in the Ellesmere area of Canterbury and in Timaru. While I haven't investigated her thoroughly there is no record of EAW having lived in Ellesmere or Timaru in our family story. Our EAW married William John David WINTER first, then Frederick KENNARD. She had, as far as I know, two daughters and three sons. They lived in St. Albans. Barbara Blanchard"

I'm with you David re Dianne's super sleuth work on this. I've done a bit of genealogy in the past decade but Dianne leaves me in the dust!

I am about to post my adoption mystery to that board and see if they can find the mother I need to find to finish the puzzle.

No...not a genius. Just know where to look for certain things. By chance, a couple of well researched family Trees on Ancestry have provided most of the info.

That boy could have ancestors from Wick.....

His other products were good for cooking along with the lamp. Combined they prevented camp a la black out.

The 1893 Electoral Roll for Women(such a useful resource!!) finds:

Eliza Ann WINTER, Domestic duties, Caledonian Rd, St Albans

Amelia COLEMAN, Domestic duties, Webb St, St Albans

Winifred B ALINGTON, Dom duties, Methven.

I don’t know ChCh – would Eliza have been a neighbour to the Colemans?
