  • Lucy Telfar Barnard,

'Scuse my (genuine) ignorance, but is `trannie' a slur? I don't think I've ever used the word, but at the same time I think I've also assumed it was a neutral, even affectionate, abbreviation of transvestite. If this is not the case, I'd like to know, just so's I know, you know?

  • Craig Ranapia, in reply to Scarlet Sorceress,

Can you please not use slurs to refer to transgender people?

I most certainly do not – but, in full context, I hope it was clear that I was being extremely sarcastic about the idea that the Hero Parade and associate events (in which which trans-gendered and transvestite people were involved) made good “normal” people gay by osmosis.

Like Lucy I used the term as an affectionate shorthand for "drag queen" or "transvestite" not as a slur on trans-people. Though, Scarlet, thanks for making me do a bit of research because this blog by trans-woman Roz Kaveney was food for thought.

I intended no slur on trans-people, but can see how it could have been read that way. My apologies.

  • Craig Young,

And to be honest, Scarlet Sorceress, some of us would much rather that the Auckland City Council repealed its implicitly transphobic ban on Manukau street soliciting and letting rental accomodation to those who might otherwise be forced into street sex work,

    Totally agree on that one!
I don't think they are mutually exclusive though.

  • PJ,

I listen to OFWGKTA and I don't believe for a second that there is any malicious intent in their lyrics nor any ulterior or underlying themes trying to encourage people to hate on gays.

Obviously musical taste is subjective but for me this group of young kids, who have done it all them selves out of bedrooms in California, are producing some of the most original hip hop I've heard in years.

I first heard Tyler on bfm (the track "Yonkers") and had to pull over to listen and look up who the hell it was - in this day and age of a constant barrage of new media in every direction it was a great feeling.

By the way OF's DJ Syd tha Kid is gay.

I really think we have to give more credit to today's "youths". They have grown up with the idea that there is nothing wrong with being gay, and that you can use the word as a playful insult without malicious intent. Yeah it might be wrong but it is what it is. you can't stop people from using slang....anyway Louis CK can articulate that thought better than me.

  • Craig Young,

I know what you're saying, PJ, but segments of the NZ LGBT community appear to have brought into the mythology of the 'dangerous underclass' disseminated by National and ACT. I think that's an incredibly distorted perception and in my view, the main source of homophobia and transphobia in Aotearoa/NZ isn't relatively marginalised Maori and Pacific Island youth subculture, but the thoroughly pakeha/palagi militant fundamentalist community. And don't worry, it's being challenged...

  • Craig Ranapia,

Hi, folks. First, once again many thanks to the awesome PAS Massive for keeping the signal-to-noise ratio pleasingly high. Just warning that I’ll be (temporarily) closing off comments on this thread from lunchtime tomorrow (Friday) until I can be arsed on Sunday morning. -Ish.
