  • Ian Dalziel,

... it's true - the dues run the blogosphere!
I feel my meagre contribution is more of a Pun Tax... (and who the hell can afford the much, much higher Sin Tax?)
There is no rebate on debate, and one feels duty-bound to assist in your tariffic work. Mental excise doesn't impose such a toll when followed by the customary cuppa levy-tea... aaah! The tithe that bind...

Ian, just be glad Russell isn't seeking Punitive Damages! ;-)

Your sentence for pun-ish- mental excess is three-ad Jack, minus tariff, plus Deuteronomy. No tussles please. Tzitzit.

  • Geoff Lealand,

@ Ian. You are such a clever bugger ;-) Sort of a Gratitude and Sense-of-Obligation Tax (GST)?

  • Ian Dalziel,

    Torah, Torah, Torah!
    Tallit like it is,
    why don't ya ;- )
    - tis Tzitzit what it ith?

    A thread-jack-knife - well twisted indeed.
    Are you torquing to me...?
Are you (politely) telling me to get knotted?
Or is this a quipu made?

    Let the abacussing begin:
(in a sort of Incan-descent rage)
the Nepohualtzintzin was a very early Mesoamerican personal computer (note the similarity of tzintzin to tzitzit, hmmm)
some nice pix here, needs translating though...

or in other words, ta for joining the fun

(Cannot compete with the punmeisters, but

TZINTZUNTZAN (a wellknown archaeological site) means 'Place of the Humming birds' - tho' which tz refers to the birds is a mute point...)

You mean joining the pun? I'm still but an imp with training whirls when it comes to the tzitzits you turn. I can but watch and learn.

Russell, FWIW I don't really need a bauble or a trinket to be convinced to contribute. The content is sufficient. I'd be happy if there was a yearly reminder to contribute something.

After listening to a bunch of NPR pledge drives while in the US I came conclusion that the logo emblazoned "incentives" they gave to their contributors somehow distracted from or devalued their excellent content.

    TZINTZUNTZAN

with a vast electrical storm in the headwaters
the burbling, oft babbling, stream of consciousness rapidly becomes a torrent, and emerging from the maelstrom, a raft of ideas ...
(or more of a raft of the Medusa for the stoned)

    Tintin no round pyramids though...

and all those humming birds (like Anne Pigalle, Grace Jones, Kirsty MacColl, Claudia Brucken, Susanne Freytag, and Anne Dudley ) on Zang Tumb Tuum Records...

and of course Zang Tumb Tumb was a hummer of a modernist tone poem...
(with brilliant ideas like: 'We must destroy syntax by placing nouns at random as they are born'
'We must abolish the adjective so that the naked noun can retain its essential colour.'
    )

Out there -where the wild words are born and play- the lightning tzingtzungtzangs
and carries our simple minds into humming birds whose very hearts beat faster
    than anything one thing zsomething-
    we can say-

When you live on the far side of the world, PAS is the only place you can get sensible information and news about what's going on at home. So I'm in too - and thanks to everyone at PAS for a place where we ex-pats can get a taste of kiwi and remember that we still all belong to Aotearoa.

  • recordari,

    ZTT Poe-mm,.
    I stand amid the roar
    Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
    Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
    Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
    One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

    Poe

Apologies for the retweet, but it just fit too well in the pun box.

  • Megan Wegan,

Late to the party, but Done.

PAS is my favourite place on the internet. So, I reckon that deserves a meagre contribution from my bank account to yours.

You are going to have to post a "new pool thermometer" so we can see how much people love this site :).

Or you could do what some of our parents tell us is done in their churches which is to announce from your pulpit how much everyone has given. <sarc>

  • Bart Janssen, in reply to Jackie Clark,

Yeah, nah. And you know that's not what I mean :P. I'm pretty sure the $5 contributions mean as as much to Russell (and the rest of us).

I just love those thermometers you see as you drive around raising money for a new school pool or a new roof for the community centre. They alway seem to be about two-thirds full. The funniest contrast I saw was one for Epsom Girls asking for several million for a new arts centre, the contrast with $10 000 thermometers in the countryside was priceless.

I suddenly thought that my comment could come across as being narky at you ,which it certainly wasn't meant to be. I think a thermometer thingy is a good idea.

Currently working on getting PayPal to give me my damn money. It's surprisingly complicated.

  • HORansome, in reply to Jackie Clark,

Many years ago, when I was a good Catholic living in Devonport, I was asked to complete the local history of the parish church (St. Francis de Sales and All Souls). Part of that history focussed on the actions of a priest, Father Terry (although he preferred to be called Dr. Terry), in the 1960s who posted on a noticeboard who, and how much, had donated monies to in the weekly collection; this, understandably, peeved a great number of parishioners and eventually a complaint was made to the Bishop and the practice was stopped. The priest in question never admitted fault and the people where glad to be rid of him when he moved on.

(Of interest to conspiracy theorists, the other major story in the history was an account of how the Freemason-controlled borough council tried to block the building of the current church of St. Francis de Sales and all Souls. This was an example of an actual plot against the local Catholics; the minutes of the council meetings are cited in the book and they make for interesting reading.)

  • Ant Timpson, in reply to Heather Gaye,

I investigated this with the company that controls all the espresso cups in Oceania. You won't believe the system setup. Don't try and circumvent it but there's a very good reason why my Newspresso (weekly mini newspaper / gigs/ ads printed onto coffee cups and given to AK central cafes) idea never took off.

But if anyone's keen on it - I have it all written up and it'd suit a one-person business.

Since when did avid coffee snobs drink out of a mug? PA-branded espresso cups, please
