The Hobbit war is a cunning plan by Warners to drive down the New Zealand dollar.

Hum... I'd love to know how the WSJ came to that conclusion, but as far as I can tell it's locked up behind a paywall. Don't know if that's an entirely bad thing, on the sanity preserving front.

Tapert certainly wasn't hostile to Jackson when One News asked him to comment when the Hobbit thing blew up:

And to be honest, I think Tapert has had more than enough shit of his own to deal with on the casting front. Re-casting your very popular and critically well-received lead is a risky move at the best of times, but the circumstances of Andy Whitfield's departure just makes it that much worse. I know people who work on Spartacus and for once the cliché "absolutely gutted" is apt.

I'd love to see the question put to Ms Ward-Leland.

I'd much rather the question be put to Lucy Lawless -- did her freaking husband bully or coerce her into taking her top off? If so, she not only needs to get a good divorce lawyer on the speed dial but go shopping for a new agent.

Craig - I suspect any organization with a live-wire like you in it would be bound to succeed. You'd be an asset on any committee. No kidding:))

@Jacqui: I just sit there and look awesome by osmosis. :)

Yes, that's very unhelpful. Some people will take the role of producer on one project, help catering for another, and be an orc in the next.

And, you know something, would anyone have been any the better off if Whale Rider director Nikki Caro or Boy producer Ainsley Gardner got slapped with a fine for mucking in with the dishes after kai at the end of the day?

Yeah Jacqui: under-gunned and if the NZAE executive look 'amateur' it may be because they are, at best, a few part-time positions.

That bugs me a lot -- on Monday the Auckland Film Society is winding up its 2010 season and we managed to negotiate venue hire, register with the Charities Commission, apply for funding from bodies that have elaborate and rigorous application and auditing requirements and manage our finances and membership with no full-time or even paid staff. Even the boring scut work only gets done by a lot of hard work and commitment from from volunteers who already have full-time jobs. (IIRC, the only paid not-even-half-time staffer our umbrella organisation, the NZ Federation of Film Societies, has is a programmer who works most of the year for the Film Festival Trust.)

We have to run a competent and professional operation because that's what the law, and more importantly our members and supporters, expect. And too bloody right they should.

Forgive the strong analogism, but are unionists in NZ really going to become the new paedophiles in the court of public opinion?

I know I'm the last one to talk (and have the slap marks to prove it), but duuuuuude... I'm blushing in places that haven't experienced blood flow since Abba broke up.

And another question for Helen Kelly.

On reflection, do you think it was entirely productive calling Peter Jackson a "spoiled brat", accusing Richard Taylor of "winding up" a "lynch mob mood" and, let's be blunt, calling Jackson, Taylor, Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens liars on Nine to Noon this morning?

I'm reasonably confident you'd find that kind of public rhetoric from employers a somewhat perverse form of good faith bargaining.

I have had to google some of the names I have been called today - one theme - all sexist and many sexually violent. Lynch mob?

@Helen: Your words, apparently. Of course, if they've been falsely attributed to you (and I've perpetuated that) please take the media outlets concerned to the BSA or Press Council.

And I don't know how much time you spend around PAS, but sexualised and violent abuse directed at women is not tolerated. Not by Russell, not by the folks with moderator privileges, or the rest of the PAS community.

Idiot/Savant just characterised the screen works who met and marched yesterday as "useful idiots".

And we've had "lynch mob of outsiders".

The minute we get "media gang rape" and "faux-feminist", I'm calling Chris Trotter bingo!
