With respect. an even more vile Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep:

There was a lot worse stuff around then, like the Mike Curb Congregation's odious Burning Bridges, but Chirpy Chirp had to be the Everest of twee. I remember two Australian wannabe punkettes in the late 70s having an 'I was a punk before you were' confrontation, the final putdown being "Bullshit, I can just see you back then sitting at home wearing stripey socks listening to Chirpy Chirpy Cheep."

I've been known to sing this in the shower...

Nothing like a good Japanese children's march.
And Joe Hisaishi is up there with Ennio Morricone IMHO.

One of the best songs ever IMHO

Along with this (+ more P P Arnold).
Thanks to Simon, who spotted this vid a few years back.

We have to think of our Australian friends.

NZ can pride itself on never having spawned anything close to the vileness incarnate that was Farnham (after the shriekingly crass failed attempt to insert him into the Gallipoli 90th anniverary event I'm assuming he's now beyond anything bar the occasional "corporate entertainer" style of gig that's sustained him for the last quarter-century).

What should have been a one-hit novelty career followed by a few years spent smarming to grannies around the leagues clubs was artificially sustained by Festival's sitting on David Cassidy's string of early 70s hits so Farnham could cover them. The godawful King of Pop event, with a tacky televised annual coronation complete with pantomime regalia, saw him through to the 80s when the full horror unfolded . . .

    Awful Irish yowling.

It does rather rejuvenate that old St Patrick's Day joke about offering a prayer that they may yet find a cure for the Irishness.

    Sacha:
I did feel a twinge of guilt after posting that, as I once whored myself out to ZM by doing a poster promo illustration. Sweet enough guy I dealt with came round after hours to pick it up & drop a cheque. While he was there Devo's Satisfaction aired for the first time on TV, and being 1978 & all I had to watch it. Poor Mr ZM was visibly disconcerted, and while he allowed that it was probably amusing, he had to draw the line at the baby with the toaster, as people might try that sort of thing at home.

Howard Devoto has aged so well!

Not a problem for someone who could turn Dostoyevsky into a classic four minute pop song. Perhaps Dr Rock empathised with that track, given his ghost in teh machine role at the preening temple of meathead smugness that was ZM.

I could never figure out how she reconciled herself with that.

Ms Waring is a definite one-off, like her record. I believe that Brian Staff chose the cover picture, as she showed no interest once she'd recorded the song. I can't remember where he sourced it, but it's nothing to do with her. Somehow I got the impression that she treated stuff like party affiliations as equally trivial. Eye on the big picture & all.

Never really got the music but I loved the Robert Crumb cover!

That'd be the late Neon Park. If ever a band's music was overshadowed by the album artwork . . .
