    Not Barry ‘Dr Rock’ Jenkins?

Jenkin, without an s if I recall correctly. I also remember him interviewing, was it Buster Stiggs(?) from the Reptiles, on Radio With Pictures. The Doc wore one of those razor blades around his neck for the occasion, and generally encouraged Mr Stiggs to reassure the viewers that no, punks didn't really bite the heads off babies. And I found myself thinking, well shit, if it was me I'd want my money back.

  • Hard News: One man’s Meat Puppets is…, in reply to Simon Grigg,

The day I bought the first Ramones album, I also bought Phil Manzanera's perfectly constructed proggy 801 Live. The latter had a few cursory plays, the first completely changed my life.

801 Live - totally forgettable, except for track 1, side 1, which has never gone away for me. Brian Eno's singing may resemble "the shriek of a wounded hare that's been shot up the arse with an airgun pellet", as an NME reviewer described it on Here Come the Warm Jets (another innuendo-ish title), but I like him fine here, once he kicks in.

Think it was well-known that Joy Division were Doors fans.

Not by me, though I was never that in to them. The first time I heard them cold the Morrisonishness was so obvious.
And I'll have to pass on the baritone theory, because Nick Cave never sounded like Jimbo.

  • Hard News: One man’s Meat Puppets is…, in reply to Danielle,

my husband has a theory that Ian Curtis sounds like Jim Morrison but no one will admit the influence because, y'know, it's Jim Morrison. Heh.

He sounded hell of a like Jim Morrison. The only mystery for me was whether it was deliberate. Certainly he sounded much more like The Lizard King /Mr Mojo than this Robyn Hitchcock attempt at a Doors pisstake.

    Norma Fraser's version

    Interesting, thank you.

    A good listing from Simon.

Special mention for Smokie & Dr Hook. As sultans of smarm they take some beating.

Never got Morrissey, with his bloody gladiolis and his flat, bordering-on-out-of-tune voice.

    Poor Morrissey.
Danny Hellman's Morrissey VS Ted Nugent.

While we're in that neck of the woods, how about Demis "Songs of the Humpback Whale" Roussos?

    P. P. Arnold. First to have a hit with First Cut, never bettered IMHO.

Any song which includes a spoken word interlude.

Isaac Hayes "By the Time I get to Phoenix"? No, say it ain't so!

Fair enough, just lay off Barry White OK?

  • Hard News: The Huawei Question, in reply to Paul G. Buchanan,

That cherry picked "evidence" was provided to the hapless Colin Powell, who was kept out of the loop by Tenet and so believed that the cut and paste reports that he was provided represented the true thoughts of the analytic community.

Poor old Colon, whose legacy depends on his not being all that smart.

    - and we all know how close the Indian Ocean is to the US, so of course they are interested in 'defending' it, along with our compliant Aussie friends!

NZ should shoulder some of the blame. As someone noted around 15 years back, when the Australian Navy moved its submarine HQ from Sydney to Rockingham on the Indian Ocean, presumably NZ was no longer seen as a significant threat.
