  • Just thinking,

At least an actual majority voted, 50.54% in ChurChur.
For local body elections that is good.

It does look like there has been a small gain in the left on council. But a lot of unknown quantities out there.

As the Mayor has one vote that might work to hold him back a bit, this time.

  • Graeme Edgeler,

I thought this was funny, from the first Herald story:

Mr Brown polled 221,167 votes, compared to 161,167 votes for Mr Banks, a victory by 60,198 votes, according to the first progress result declared after the polls closed at midday.

Businessman Colin Craig was in third place with 60,198 votes.

The numbers seem too perfect - a margin between the two leading candidates exactly equal to the third place getter - and it was, of course, wrong. The replacement there now isn't much better:

Mr Brown polled 221,167 votes, compared to 161,167 votes for Mr Banks, a victory by 60,198 votes, according to the first progress result declared after the polls closed at midday.

Businessman Colin Craig was in third place with 40,483 votes.

The tallies of the first and second are the same as the first story, but still aren't right - the numbers they give don't have a difference of 60,198 votes, but exactly 60,000 votes. Maybe those are the fake votes? :-)

Someone should get John Banks comments on the real numbers, though:

He had not dissected why he lost, but noted the 60,000 votes won by "another first-class candidate" - a reference to business-minded Colin Craig.

I go with the "cow" version, myself Carol, not that I know for sure - one of the hazards of being a reader before a listener.

Not despondent at all at the moment, especially anticipating good election results from Dunedin

Both established factions short of overall majorities, C&R down to 5. Seen nothing very authoritative yet, Orsman seems bit light on detail and others have painted a far closer left/right balance.

Don't actually think that's a very useful way of looking at it. Whoever won the headline race, I thought they'd need some pretty strong people, from both left and right, to provide a reality check on a pair of desperately mediocre, platitude-addled candidates. Don't think we've done too badly.

  • Islander,

"slough" can be pronounced slew, sloff, sluff, or ryhme with cow - depending on where you live.
The Heinemann NZ dictionary gives the pronunciations "rhymes with cow" (for a swampy area) and "sluff" (for casting off, as in a crayfish sloughing its shell.)

Neither is Jim Anderton, whose performance on One News was spectacularly churlish. Here's an FYI: When you're being outclassed by John Banks you've scored the mother of all #epicfail.

(And speaking of One News, perhaps this wasn't the occasion for a cheap and stupid attempt to score a point off Rodney Hide? FFS, the Local Government Minister wasn't going to pull a Tizzard and bitch Len Brown so quit fucking trolling.)
