The Herald, doing what it does best.

  • Alfie,

More an observation than anything... the Herald is testing a new site design. I'm not sure about the huge LHS nav bar taking up a quarter of the screen. It's apparently designed primarily for mobiles.

It is ghastly to use on a PC. So much so, I am not going to bother any more.

That was the feedback I gave them. It's like the online version of tabloid v broadsheet but worse.

The beta seems to have subsumed the original - as I can no longer get anything but the stark beta.

  • Geoff Lealand,

I can't seem to find a suitable thread so I will post this naked promotion here:

Auckland folk may be interested in catching a film I co-produced, screening as part of Doc Edge Auckland this Friday at Q Theatre (in Shorts 2, 2.30pm June 2). I will probably do a Q&A after the screening, explaining how this natty little film evolved, whilst its creator Nick Homler was a Fulbright Scholar at Waikato in 2015-16. It is a celebration of small, independent cinemas in New Zealand, and the people who run them.

sadly the documentary festival does not venture beyond the North Island

Many thanks, Ian. I obviously left off the important bit. I am a bit of twit sometimes!
I am exploring the possibly of further screening around the country, especially in those cinemas which feature in the film.

Even RadioNZ is not immune :

It is the first time two New Zealanders have shared the winners' podium since Bruce McLaren and Bruce Amon's triumph in 1966.

Is your name not Bruce then ?
    No, It's Chris.
Mind if we call you Bruce to save confusion ?

    'in vino veritas' perhaps

I see they've fixed that link box now - but in keeping with the general ethos of 'can't be bothered' they haven't fixed it in the story!

...but I honestly don’t believe the route to wellbeing is through depravation and that a physical-only focus gives us all we need. Attending to all four elements of wellbeing is far more progressive, effective and sustainable.

    <my bold>

There's also the finer points of whether they are talking about 'privation' or 'deprivation' and did they really mean 'denial' - as deprivation and its de-less version relate to 'necessities' of life.

    plus plonk…
The new NZ Herald site is clunky – they’ve hidden the links to the regional papers off to the side, (no link on their NZME network box at the bottom either) and I note the Hawke’s Bay Today page has a lot less stories on offer – with seemingly no way to browse older stories.
Perhaps one can pay something to get better access?

Not to mention their annoying penchant for ‘doubling down’ on stories (as pictured above)

Clunky... yes. Another description would be horrible. Not only have many older stories magically vanished, but they've broken handy links such as the one I used to view Steve Braunias' stories. It's pretty easy to redirect those types of links while users adapt to a new site, but the Herald haven't bothered.

I usually adapt well to site makeovers as long as usability isn't degraded. But as one who previously visited the Herald site several times a day, I find the emphasis on larger images with far fewer headlines frustrating. Since the redesign I no longer go there.

I truly hope The Herald site looks stunning on the mobile phones it's designed for, because it sure as hell looks crap on my 24" widescreen monitors.

I too am now never visiting the Herald site, whereas I was previously a daily visitor. You've got to wonder at how much their traffic has fallen since the makeover.

  • linger,

Consider also that most newspaper readers are now approaching, or past, the age when reading glasses become a necessity, and the Herald's focus on design for small screens to the exclusion of all else seems suicidal.

I believe they'll be progressively importing their massive archive of content to the new CMS system they're using, is all.

Stuff is running a story about the premiums people pay to live within 100m of a beach. Apparently some Queenstowners pay 31.62% more for those sea views. Really?

Sorry Susan Edmunds... but that's a fail.

Metres... miles... easy to confuse, eh.

It's around 80km to the West Coast as the crow flies. From a 100m viewpoint you can see around 36km so the only sea view you're likely to find in QT would entail standing on the top of an 500m+ tower block. And there are not too many of those in QT... yet.
