That's a great picture - amazing that it took over 30 years from conception to completion.

  • Hard News: Abroad and Home,

Nice wee article in Newsroom about how it is in the EU's interest to make Brexit a mess, to disuade other countries from trying it on.

    It sums up with :

Seen this way, the EU would be foolish to make Brexit easy for the Brits. It would only encourage the others. Instead, the EU would want a British post-Brexit recession, queues of trucks at British ports, and ideally some further disruptions to amplify its message: Don’t try this at home!

Making Brexit tough has little to do with punishment for the Brits and everything with sending a strong warning to any other European country.

The Brexit negotiations are therefore not a game of chicken. Worse, they are a calculated plot to show that a withdrawal from the EU may be legally possible but practically undesirable.

The only chance to avoid this outcome would be if those EU members with strong trade links to Britain exerted their influence to allow Britain more favourable conditions. At this stage, however, it does not look likely that such concerns will sway the outcome.

  • Hard News: Abroad and Home,

Thanks for your summary Rich. I haven't heard much about Brexit of late and assumed that progress was being made. Somewhat scary that it isn't. Glad it doesn't directly affect me.

  • Hard News: A Stand for Quaxing,

And today I tried quaxing to King’s Plant Barn. A little tricky packing them in, but pretty successful (much to the bemusement of the checkout staff). No bike racks here (unsurprisingly), but nothing to actually lock the bike to at all.

Not having any eggs while half way through making muffins, and the electric car having just started charging, was enough incentive to get me off on my first ever Quax. Literally, dusted the cobwebs off my 1988 Healing Skylark, pumped the tyres up, and headed off to the very Fruit World that was in this article. Still no bike racks, but I parked by the front door so a bit of the bike was visible from within the shop, and didn't bother with the lock. Successfully fit all the fruit and veges in, but I had to split the bunch of bananas between the drink bottle holders. Could've been problematic if I'd bought anything more.

  • Hard News: Big Night Outage, in reply to Russell Brown,

I avoided opening the fridge and freezer until last night, for obvious reasons. We seem to have got through okay there, which is a relief – it's a full freezer

We didn't open the freezer until the power came back on after 18 hours off, and when I checked the ice cream it wasn't even soft. It would appear that new modern fridges can retain their cool for quite some time - I guess the drop in air temperature helped.
