Congratulations Jen and David. What a lovely wee boy!
Seems every birth has a story: the human prologue. Hope things settle down for a while! ;-) -
Congratulations to all three of you - but particularly to Jennifer.
Robert's a great name, it'll fit him for anything from All Black to Prime Minister. He owes you a totally worry-and-angst free childhood and teenagerdom now, he's used up all his parental anxiety credits.
And hooray for the nice man from Vodaphone!

Paul would be a nice man wherever he worked ...

I sat next to my wife during the 16 hours of the first labour and the 8 hours and caesarian of the second.
Ha. I did thirty-eight hours the first time round. So the second time, we knew how this thing went. Ended up being vastly unprepared because of all the things I left to do during the long boring labour.
The thirty-eight was vastly preferable to the one.

Good point, Emma, I should have mentioned - YMMV, plus I am unqualified to speak from experience.

A public low cost/no cost wireless network (& perhaps the odd wireless laptop) for the wards in the public hospitals would be a great way for patients & their families to overcome some of the isolation that occurs at hospitals.... & great way to get some informed advice whilst waiting for a doc ;op
Given that last night Chch hospital admitted that staff shortages in their emergency dept possibly contributed to the death of a patient, I'm not sure if internet access is top of their list of things to spend money on now.
Congrats on the baby. It's all uphill from now, honest.

Thank you one and all for your kind messages. It's very nice to know that people have been thinking of us...
In no particular order:
Haydn:
Congratulations on winning the naming competition. We do, in fact, refer to him as Bob-the-baby (which is, obviously, a shortened form of Bob-ther-baby).
Russell Brown:
Your 'Cropwell Bishop Shropshire' explanation of Jennifer's cheese dream sounds plausible -- and yet, perhaps, a little too glib and rehearsed. But nevertheless, regardless of my suspicions, Jennifer tells me she'll take the cheese.
P.S. I am highly touched that you were able to detect my "basic goodness" even in a post in which I profess a strong urge to punch you on the nose.
Emma Hart:
I'm afraid young Bob could almost certainly beat me at chess even now. I'm completely hopeless at all those sorts of games -- all I keep thinking is: "I could write a computer program to do this and save myself the effort of remembering all these rules".
Paul Brislen:
Jennifer is now highly jealous of the 'missile launch buttons' in the Auckland hospital lifts. In fact, she says she'll have our next baby up in Auckland -- just for the possibility of being able to give those buttons a try.
Jolisa Gracewood:
Thank you for your timely warning. I shall avoid any mustard-like food groups until Bob is out of nappies.
Zippy Gonzales
Oh, you North Islander, you... here is the definition from the Oxford New Zealand Dictionary:
lux verb [from the proprietary name Electro__lux__ a brand of vacuum cleaner.] To clean by vacuum cleaner. Occs. As a noun, a vacuum cleaner.
Weirdly, the first example given by the ONZD is from Roger Hall's play 'Prisoners of Mother England' (1980) "... refused to lux the venetians". Maybe a refusal to lux venetian blinds is widespread -- thus leading to Carl's entrepreneurial business activities.
Having said that, I think I prefer Robyn Gallagher's explanation. How lovely for the Venetians to be singled out for illumination whenever they visit Christchurch.
Apologies for not replying in greater detail -- but feeding, nappies, and bath-time beckon...

Fantastic news. Congratulations to you both.

I shall avoid any mustard-like food groups until Bob is out of nappies.
You can relax, you don't need to wait til he's out of nappies - just til he starts on (semi-)solids. After that the colour & texture will no longer resemble mustard, and will take any number of other hues. Especially if, for his second birthday, you get him a Thomas The Tank Engine cake with lots of very, very blue icing. That one I can speak from experience on.

While I'm sure this has been an utterly nerve-wracking time for you and Jennifer, your posts about the "slow journey" of the little heir apparent have made me roar with laughter.
Mazel tov to you all! So good to hear it's ended on such a fine note. :)

Oh, David. He's beyooooooooootiful. Personally, I don't have babies, I just like to look at them, and young Bob the Baby is a very lovely person to look at, I must say. Although, do you really think you should be talking so blithely about having a second human being so soon after the first one. Jennifer may have something to say about that!
