But that doesn't matter. Because my unfocused sense of grievance and resentment is worth more than your fancy facts and numbers any day.
It has always been the way.
Off topic, but speaking of senses of grievance - has anyone come across this yet?

And, finally, Hamilton's very own robot band The Trons have become an internet sensation. Truly, this is good news for hard times …
It is good news and I am especially pleased for Greg Locke, as he's an old friend of mine. He's always been very clever with technical and mechanical stuff, plus he's been a fixture in the Hamiltron music scene for years.
David Farrier did a neat article on The Trons for Nightline a few weeks back (it's on Youtube) and it was neat how the start of the article makes it seem as if The Trons are a real band.

Spare Room catches Telecom making shit up again. The happy company in that new TV ad doesn't exist
People thought that was real?
Also, not finding a partnership in the companies register shouldn't be too much of a surprise.
And I assumed accountancy firm, not law firm as Spareroom did :-)

http://www.population.govt.nz/myth-busters/default.htmSweet. I confess, there were a couple of those I thought were true ...

there will be small businesses which have dropped the additional annual cost of the RUC in just one morning. No one will be compensating them.
Such as my favourite (and independent) coffee shop, which didn't open this morning.
The all-lanes blockade was also formed on the NW Motorway, just before the Newton offramp. Interestingly, traffic was flying along at around 80kph until that point.
Such obstructions, which surely cannot be legal(?), are in strict contravention of the trucker PR parroted on last night's news to the effect that "truckies will occupy the left lane only to minimize inconvenience and disruption" on the news last night.
Trucks running through reds as I tried to cross with the buzzer on Queen St was another highlight of my morning. Such reckless disregard for pedestrians didn't stop cheers from Rodney Hide, and supportive mutters from Maurice Williamson, I noticed.
-
people are lining up to back the truckies.
Yes! As my partner said over the tooting on Vivian Street this morning - "It's like telethon!" As were the jolly live crosses on Nat Rad ...

You know, exactly the same comparison occurred to me.

Saatchi and Saatchi need to cast better talent. Some of those screen performances are abysmal.
-
Goodness me... that telecom ad really sucks, irregardless of whether it's made up or a rip off of that other (utterly charming) clip.
Some antagonism in the comments at Spareroom though.
-
I have been at work since 7.20am, and am therefore rather cranky, but... feh.
The whole trucking thing did, however, give me an excuse to revisit not only 'Convoy' by C. W. McCall, but also the hilariously maudlin works of Red Sovine. This one's a cracker:
Oh, CB radio. Is there nothing you can't do?
-
I'll see your Convoy, and raise you "Not the Nine O'Clock News": today's earworm.
I like trucking, I like trucking,
I like trucking and I like to truck.
I like trucking, I like trucking,
If you don't like trucking, tough luck. -
Because my unfocused sense of grievance and resentment is worth more than your fancy facts and numbers any day.
It has always been the way.And now we can understand why, with the advances in neuroscience.

Also just in, Spot the Dog actually Vodafone customer. Shocking news at 11.
Seriously, not news.

But some of the reader's e-mails both pro- and anti- were cringe-inducing though. Somehow, I think both "freedom fighters" and "economic vandals on a par with boy-racers" were the kind of stuff Morning Report should leave to the more excitable reaches of the Herald's Your Views feature.
Anyway, I'll stick to my default position that protesters are fucking annoying and cause enormous inconvenience to third-parties who just want to get on with their lives. But that's the point. But I wonder if any Wellywooders remember when the CBD was basically shut down for a movie premiere (and incidentally the Council picked up the tab not New Line)? Now that got on my last nerve.

the simply gorgeous new record from The Watson Twins
Is it actually, their last album (not the one with Jenny Lewis) was very forgettable. Nice, but forgettable.
-
Sorry that was supposed to be a question: Is it actually?

Well, we liked the last one around here. 'Shoot the Lights Out' is a beautiful song.
The new one sounds really sweet to me. I'm intrigued by the way they sometimes sing harmonies so close you're not sure whether it's one voice or two.

I fully support anyones right to strike, but being paid to 'strike'. This was a political parade, not a strike.
Reminded me of the Uni of Canty lockout where the Student wrep and vice chancellor stood side by side at the lockout proclaiming it a strike.
This lockout about Govt funding came after a massive building boom on campus which I'm told there were 'issues' regarding the funding. -
This was a political parade, not a strike.
Isn't the word "protest"?

From that Population site:
According to United Nations population projections, a world population of seven billion will be reached in 2013, and then stabilise at the 10 billion mark by the 2200s. At this rate of growth, the living will never outnumber the dead.
So the zombies win. Well that's just great.

Perhaps "protests" are what students, leftist radicals, and unwashed hippies engage in? Whereas wealthy corporate interests "parade" in front of the masses?
Fairly adoring masses in this case, sadly.

Re: Craig R's "But that's the point."
Exactly!
I love how, whether it's convoying truckers, or striking ferry workers (in school holls, naturally)... they always make a point of apologizing to the public for the inconvenience caused..
So sorry.... my arse. The Whole point IS the inconvenience.... it wouldnt be a very effective protest or strike if no one noticed would it? It's why its on the news.
If they were actually sorry, they'd do something else (and it wouldnt be effective).

It was great driving into Dunedin from Port Chalmers this morning. No trucks infesting the road!
I wish it was like this every morning. -
I'll admit that I took the Telecom ad for face value. Obviously staged but a bona fide corporate Telecom client. In fact, I was sure I'd heard of the company - how's that for embarrassing!!! And yes, they were accountants. :p
Rather disappointed. I would have taken Saatchis for smarter than that. I fail to see how that sort of stunt (that leaves people feeling stupid/embarrassed) can be positive for the Telecom brand?

Yep -- our local main road was brilliant with all the trucks elsewhere occupied. Interesting ...
Meanwhile, Your Views is its weirdly, sadly compelling self. I suppose it was inevitable that people would start finding links between road user charges and the anti-smacking law ...
