MSM. n. Derogatory (usually). Pronounced: Emesem. Mainly refers to "paper news". Connotations of being "old hat" but reliable......and (possibly) biased.
That practically didn't exist before blogs and webnews.

Also “yeah yeah yeah” When did we start saying that in threes?
My husband theorises that in any large social gathering of New Zealanders, if you listen carefully, there will be regular exclamations of "yeahyeahyeah" around the room. It's a Thing We Do and I don't know why.
-
Woty - relaxed
As in I'm relaxed about all the faux pas I've made this yearWotd- like (with thumbs up symbol)
From Facebook. We may try to deny but this has been the phenomenon even in NZ. And it started in 2004, though seems to be on the wane from next year. -

Google seems to have been around since the late 90s- but did it become a verb before 2002?
Definitely. People were using it that way when I was living in Sydney and I came back in 2001.

hear, hear...
“yeahyeahyeah”
+ "Yeah, No"
(phrase of the decade/millennium) -
Word of the year -- I'm with 'hashtag'.
Word of the decade -- how about 'GFC' ? Strictly speaking an acronym, I know... -
"Nec minit" earned it's stripes too.
I'd rather give Levi kudos over anything John Key has said. It would ruin my day to think Mr Keys won woty for his weasle words. -
"scaffolder-investor"
It seems so long ago now...
-
I'm putting a hands up for "equality" for WOTY
-
WOTY: Kiosk - it's link to PA and the unfolding of privacy breaks through several agencies. Go Keith.
WOTD: Media - mainstream-, social-, new/old-, and of course Media7/3. The frequency of the word these days compares to when I only heard it used at University. -
My favourite is still cyber marae as it describes PAS so well. But not a widely used term.
So for WOTY I think Dotcom probably has it over PlanetKeyFor WOTD anything to do with social media eg hashtag, skype, tweet, twitter, facebook, smart phone, or political activism: Anonymous, Occupy or 1% (recent but hugely influential), or even climate change or Peak Oil
Or any noun used as a verb or vice versa (eg 'Here's your invite" or "I will Facebook you").
-
I would also like to suggest a NZer of the Year - someone who stood up for people and principles in spite of powerful opposition.
Suggestions:
Mike Joy
Lance O'Sullivan (Northland doctor)
Keith Ng
Annette Sykes
Kim Dotcom
Most people in Christchurch -
And for those following the great Auckland gravy train (CRL sorry) $173 million has been allocated as fees for c'nts (pronounced "consultants" of course.)

She loves you? Yeah, yeah, yeah …

Picked it up unconsciously off someone I worked with. Sounds like I'm being impatient rather than agreeing. #grrr

Sacha, in reply to
"Yeah, No"
That's true - when did "yeah, nah" first appear?
Calling Dr Hay.. -
I think the speed of the yeah is intended to indicate the level of familiarity with a point they agree with, or at least understand. One long slow measured yeah is like "that's deep, sista", whereas "yeahyeahyeahyeah..yup..yup......Yeah!" is going from x12 on MySky to x6 to normal speed...catching up, slowing down.
It's also pause filler, though.

Strictly speaking an acronym, I know…
Just to be pedantic, it's actually an initialism as opposed to an acronym which is distinguished by the initial letters being spoken as a word (such as RADAR) rather than articulating each letter. (such as G.F.C. or U.S.A.)
So, yeah nah, at the end of the day it's all good going forward.

Ditto.
WOTD, this might just reflect my perspective; PLTD as in 'Permanent or Long Term Departures' (I think David Slack offered 'Australia' too). Remember the 'Wave Goodbye to Higher Taxes, Not Your Loved Ones)
-
My thoughts:
- Novopay, surely the worst run IT project I've heard of in a long time. It makes me embarrassed to be an IT Consultant
- Kiosk, also makes me embarrassed to be an IT Consultant, and particularly one with a geeky bent
- Kim Dotcom, as much as I hate to admit it. Can we please just have one day this year when the large smiling Mercedes driving German is not in the news? Just one please? -
WotY: EPO as in Lance 'erythropoietin' Armstrong
WotD: P as in pure methamphetamine -
Jane, in reply to
yeah, no. Yeah.

East of Eden...
’Wave Goodbye to Higher Taxes,
Not Your Loved Ones"Down here in Chchch, National's
promised 'Brighter Future'
has morphed into the grimmer
'Brighton Future'*Though the locals have a much better plan
than the Council/Govt's lame ideas...*could someone tell John Key there are still people living in much worse conditions and physically unsafe suburbs in Chch East, while he is busily promising the folk of Hobsonville they won't be left behind or uncared for.
(Not to deny those folk need help, my sympathies go out to them all, but just don't believe a word Key says - rely on your local community and people who care.) -
Ian Dalziel, in reply to

New Zealand - 100% P
has a certain cachet...
or is that sachet?
