  • Deborah,

I’m delighted for you, Russell. Congratulations!

If ever a man earned the right to drink red wine from a trophy and exclaim “I am a golden god!”, it’s Matt.

  • TracyMac,

    Congrats re the award!

Great initiative with Press Patron. I'll be checking it out when I'm on a real computer. Is it intended to be available to international sites?

  • Carol Stewart,

Congratulations to you, Russell, and also to my good friend Barbara Fountain. So very well deserved in both cases.
Also very happy to see The Wireless get the best website award. I'm not exactly the target demographic, but I love it. RNZ just get better and better. Wallace Chapman's Sunday morning programme yesterday was so good.

The John Kirwan interview in particular was amazing. It’s no small thing running an interview that long, but it was compelling.

That is Alex's long-term plan. He's nothing if not ambitious.

I snuck a pic of a very happy Radio NZ CEO Paul Thompson just after the website award was announced.

  • artig,

Congratulations on the award. Sorry to hear that Media Take is ending soon. It seems like it's only just begun.

Nice one Russ - you really do superb work and while I understand the weariness you must feel (god, I feel it too), you're doing God's work (if there was a God, of course...)

Congratulations Russell and everyone else who contributes to this part of the blogosphere. As you acknowledge this community has been developing for so long. This award is well deserved for foresight, continued innovation, and outstanding tenacity. Looking forward to the new subscription format.

Congrats again. Now you can concentrate on that ”crisis around hosing” story I’ve been hanging out for.

  • Damian Christie,

Congratulations Russell, I'm glad I wrote that post the other week after a lengthy absence, gives me bragging rights, however undeserved :)

Why are we joining the Press Council out of interest? Are there any upsides to giving people an official ruling body they can complain about us to? I'm thinking something tangible, like a party, rather than 'best practice/good governance'...

On that, I miss the event that was the TV awards, but I certainly don't miss all the unnecessary bitterness and rivalry it created between TVNZ and TV3, or even between shows and between reporters on the same show.

But if we are going to do such a thing, then I think we should now have categories for video (perhaps under 2 minutes and over 2 minutes or something, to separate news from longer form) regardless whether it's come from the Herald or One News.

The other distinctions are all blurring too. Public Address vs The Wireless vs Spin Off vs One News vs Pantograph Punch - it starts to become a bit like distinguishing between variations in electronic music. We're deep house, right?

But as our industry shrinks, I come back to the point that it'd be good to have a truly inclusive media event (I'd happily forsake the awards given the choice). I definitely have FOMO when it comes to the Canons rolling around each year.

  • Graeme Edgeler,

I looked at nominating for the Media awards this year, as it was the first time I felt I'd written 3 posts worthy of nominating in a single calendar year. Then I looked at the category, and thought "best blog site, does it have to be the whole site, do I even qualify to nominate myself?" and then never got around to it, so it's nice to know I actually won :-)

He should be able to tap into some good sources. As long as the content isn't watered down.

Well done Russell. I've donated lump sums in the past but an easy way to do a nice little drip feed would be good and a pleasure.

You did – and I'd have been happy to verify your entry. But would I then have had to enter "Public Address, apart from Graeme Edgeler"?

So I think there's a pretty clear case for a Best Blogger too. The category keeps changing and the judges' decisions have been a bit odd at times – and this year all three finalists were multi-author blog sites, because that's what the category implied.

People have asked, so I should also note that I won the "Best Blogger" award the first year it was offered at the old Qantas Awards, some time in the 2000s.

I supported it because there have been a couple of occasions where I've attended court hearings as a member of the public (occasionally with a possible thought about blogging on them) and suppression has been ordered, and I thought it was either totally unnecessary, or at least overbroad, and I've thought that I'd like to be able to stand up and oppose suppression, and writing for an organisation that is subject to the Press Council would give me that right.

I see. And I can see how that would be useful. Perhaps you could apply as "Public Address, just the bit that Graeme Edgeler does" (that would be Legal Beagle, of course). :)

You would win the Outrageously Clever Wordsmith Award every year.
I wish you'd write a novel, though. Or a book of some sort that we could all buy. We would, you know.
