@Craig:
We're all looking forward to The Standard explaining how Julia Gillard's rise to the top of the greasy pole
Or, y'know, you could actually have a look at their site. Where they simply note Rudd's almost inexplicable fall from record popularity, and light-heartedly wonder whether the same fate might befall John Key.
It won't of course, given: the absence of a faction system and an heir-apparent, the placid media environment, and Key's desire to be liked by everyone (and thus avoid polarizing decisions).
The real relevance to NZ politics is that some in the NZLP will look to how Abbott revived the bloated corpse of the Liberal Party, and wonder whether someone (i.e., Cunliffe) might do the same for them.

the commentators over here are saying that Gillard will destroy Tony Abbott in an election.
From my limited viewpoint, it looks like a no brainer: mummy's boy versus strong-minded female? Easy.

Julia Gillard
this should help sales of Pampered Menial
or at least give Pavlov's Dog some extra needle money...or The Beatles for that matter

Well, Rudd destroyed the pox that was the Howard government, and look how far that got him! ;-)

@Christopher

John Howard lived at home until he was 32. Didn't seem to hurt his career any.

Here's another interesting article which gives a bit more background on how the Labour internal factions are what brought him down:
-
Today is a very interesting day. One other thing to note is that Google has won the copyright case Viacom brought against it.
Okay, it's a big deal for I.P. geeks like me.
-
And another one of Rudd's failings is that he managed to alienate almost all of his public servants. I know of rabid Labor supporters in the executive PS who vowed never to vote for "that @rseh*le".
Also, he does not know the meaning of consultation - not at all (although there is such a thing as too much at times). Stuck his head out on a limb and expected everyone else to clean up after him.
-
"This crypto-fascist made no effort to build a base in the party. Now that his only faction, Newspoll, has deserted him he is gone."
OUCH!
I wish someone would apply the same results orientated blow torch to Goff, it is increasingly clear that while he is an effective machine politician, his machine is last centuries make and model.

Gutted I missed the Maori game
Bloody marvellous game. As good as when they beat the British Lions a couple of years back. Lovely, swirling rugby--with Gear, Sweeny, Messam, McAlister just superb.
-
@Tom - agree 100%, lose Goff now.
-
So, Kev is proud then?
-
So, Kev is proud then?
Of the fact.
Evidently.
-
Having said that....the crying? Is pretty hard to watch.
-
What a bizarre resignation speech
-
I've had a terrible Led Zeppelin earworm in my head all morning, and it's all @davidslack's fault:
There's a lady who's sure
They were nuts to tax gold.
And she's climbing the stairway

Gilliard always sounded more like an Aussie to me.

That sure is a huge victory for Google, although Viacom is appealing. So it's really only Round One to Google.
-
I don't find Viacom very appealing at all.
-
Gutted I missed the Maori game, trawled some of the rugby newsgroups and Twitter later in the evening and realised I'd missed a classic.
Hunt down the haka, it was totally aws! At one stage during it the maoris suddenly marched forward 3-4 paces in unison, tv camera was perfectly lined up in front at ground level showing what the English would see. Freekin terrifying..

I could, but like Kiwibog the reek of decomposing hack bullshit makes my eyes bleed.

Ah, yes... I always look to Spotsbet and the TAB for their insightful political analysis and rigorous polling methodology. Meanwhile, I don't know if "ooh look - ladybits!" is going to be any more of a election-winning strategy than it was for John McCain. We shall see. (Then again, perhaps my POV is warped by spending my adult life in a country where it isn't superfreaky to see women in positions of authority.)
-
Apropos of cinema, I though Taika Waititi on Campbell Live was charmingly relaxed on the whole piracy thing.
-

They have some damn fine shows tho'. Daily Show and Colbert are but two.
-
Speaking of the media and all.. Anyone else noticed how quickly any interest whatsoever in The Times vanished since timesonline.co.uk went behind a paywall?
Gone in a puff of smoke, leaving the field open to the Guardian and the Torygraph...
Tough shit Rupert, what is your next try? -
@ Craig
I agree - who'd get their political analysis from Centrebet or the TAB... when you can get it from POLITICAL commentators in the plethora of media outlets who have been disecting every part of this drama on this side of the ditch as it has unfolded over the past 24 hours.
That said - it should be pretty clear that there's a fairly significant difference in ability, substance, intelligence and experience between Julia Gillard and Sarah Palin. I'd wager that its a pretty safe bet (to continue the gambling theme) that Gillards "lady bits" are unlikely to be the main rationale behind the ALP's strategy in replacing an increasingly unpopular and potentially election losing PM with the current (and relatively popular) deputy prime minister...
