  • Don Christie,

Hi Russel. Is the podcast part 1 supposed to be 88mb?

  • Craig Ranapia,

This week's Media7 is a lively affair -- as in: I couldn't shut the buggers up -- with Sean Plunket, Amanda Millar and Jim Tucker discussing the art of the interview.

Should be interesting -- especially with Plunket on board, who can be both the best and the worse interviewer out there. IMO, that interview with David Benson-Pope is a textbook example of what can happen when you get the basics right. But he's starting to relapse into hectoring Rottie mode, which is unfortunate.

  • Russell Brown,

Hi Russel. Is the podcast part 1 supposed to be 88mb?

That looks like it's the whole show. I'll have to download it and see.

  • Don Christie,

    No it isn't, unfortunately...

Also discovered that files 2 and 3 are in fact a repeat of 1 :-(

That's a lot of megs for your serves to pass around.

Otherwise...it is shaping up to be an excellent show!

    88 milli-bits doesn't seem that big to me :-)

I guess it's what you do with it that counts, Graeme.

  • Russell Brown,

In the meantime, it's all there in quite nice quality on the YouTube channel:

  • David Ritchie,

While we're on the topic of "this is broken" -- the video files on TVNZ O.D. are in 4:3 so the widescreen picture is stretched at the top & bottom.

  • David Ritchie,

The ratio issue might have something to do with the Rickards interview in the first section (which is in 4:3).

  • cindy baxter,

"it's all there in quite nice quality"... well not quite yet - third section not up yet.

It might be useful if they were labelled 1,2 and 3 with the dates?

  • Tom Ackroyd,

iTunes plays the podcast anamorphic (320x240). The producers stretched Rickards to fit. Something they may have enjoyed doing.

  • Cecelia,

Seemed to be a bit of a prob with TV on demand but I saw the bit on interviews and loved it. Sean Plunket for Close-Up! He's very engaging on TV. The Hard Talk interview was brill too. It's good to have someone bringing us these gems.

  • Jackie Clark,

I've said so many nice things about Freeview lately that it seems only fair to point out one area where Freeview will struggle against Sky -- the PVR end of the market. We still haven't really got comfortable with the Topfield satellite Freeview PVR we're using -- or, rather, not using all that often because the MySky a much better consumer device. I can see why Freeview doesn't want to put these on the market until it has done some work on usability.
Meanwhile, we still use the Freeview HD terrestrial box for actually watching broadcast TV, because the sound and picture it provides is so superior.

I bought a lovely new flat screen modern telly for my bedroom the other day, and as an add-on (with the telly we had purchased the previous day for the lounge - again, a flat screen modern wonder) recieved a "free" freeview HD box. Let's try again, I thought. Nice nerdy friend comes round and duly attaches it to TV in bedroom. Beautiful quality, excellent sound............but you see, I still use a video recorder - so oldfashioned I know. And hence, because the whole point of putting the box on the telly anyway was so I could have lovely quality reception on TV1 and TV2, (and so I could tape them, in all that lovely quality, unlike now, when the reception's a bit dodgy)when it was fully explained to me that really, I had to video like I used to.........once again, I got rid of the Freeview box. I think I'll wait till they do what you said, Russell. In the meantime, I'll have to watch Media7 online.

  • cindy baxter,

Great excerpt from BBC's Hardtalk interview with the PM - good point on that Russell - it's a shame we don't get to see such interviews and probing here in NZ - I've yet to see anyone here pushing her on exactly HOW we become carbon neutral esp with exporting so much coal.

  • Alex Gilks,

As it happened I watched your show for first time last night. On TVNZ on demand. Quite watchable in fullscreen from a distance. Ok in meantime anyway :)

Good show, like it. A reminder that if TV weren't so obsessed with having good-looking and only moderately sharp reporters, we might be able to watch way better interviews, instead of having to rely more on other media.

Plunket is great I reckon, but can someone please tell him to stop doing those impatient little grunts when his subject is having their turn.

LOL - what are you saying about the Media 7 presenters here?

  • FletcherB,

On the subject of difficult interviewees....

I suspect a reasonable proportion of the obstinance of police interviewees is in the interest of not giving away information to criminals still on the run from the crime being interviewed about, and after capture, not jeopardizing subsequent prosecutions... It might even be said to be in the public interest? (but not the interest of good TV)

a quick YouTube aside: dunno if you've already mentioned here, but you can finally view higher-resolution clips there, by adding this little bit to URLs:

  • Rich of Observationz,

Great Listener article (and by linking it here, one can find the interesting content in it without having to wade through the lifestyle / rightwing bullshit in the rest of the rag).

    - isn't the Telecom/Vodafone 'hip" rivalry just a competition to be the biggest try-hard?

    - is Apple's premium pricing a bit steep for NZ kids used to $300 no-brand handsets?

    - can one do that sort of exclusive deal in NZ without falling foul of the Commerce Commission?

    - according to El Reg, while VOIP will be allowed on Wifi in the new Apple 3G phones, it will be blocked on 3G. How "seamless" is that? And where will WiMax fit into this model?

  • Russell Brown,

once again, I got rid of the Freeview box.

You ... got rid of it? Aren't there starving mediaphiles in Mt Eden who'd just love some HD?

But I'm surprised that you don't seem to be able to use your VCR with it. Did your nerdy friend try connecting it to the Freeview box via either the RF (ie: aerial) cable or a standard composite video lead?

  • Alex Gilks,

Right on, this consumer discontent ;)

Freeview sounds cool but seriously, these engineers of TVs and related devices are total a***holes. A myriad of video formats, input jacks and cables; a new obselete connection with every new innovation. Why is a TV harder to drive than a car?

The computer seems delightfully old-school compared to all this junk: network cable, power cable, keyboard and mouse, and you're pretty much good to go for anything (except stuff like Food in a Minute). No wonder my students are downloading and watching TV shows and avoiding TV.

Well, no, I happened to mention the saga to the nice young man at Telecom who was helping me with something else, and he offered to buy it off me. Which he duly did.

hmmm, I have to say, I don't know........

  • bulk,

Had a reply back from Freeview saying it would be 5-6 months before they had a PVR box available - from your comments Russell I hope they have something more user friendly by then?!

Actually a bit miffed off that Freeview didn't have a PVR available at HD launch, as I'm not that keen to fork out $399 now and then again before the year is out!

  • Kyle Matthews,

OK now that's freaking me out. I've never seen Sean Plunket before, just listened to him.

He looks a little like, sounds a fair bit like, but has almost exactly the same mannerisms as Grant Robertson.

And given that Sean has interviewed Grant many times, now I have an image in my head of them actually being the same person and doing some sort of weird one person, two microphones radio thing.
