It’s the Waiau quake really because that is where it started, but the way it pinged across faults and involved 10 or more faults right up to Cook Strait poses a naming problem. The North-East South Island quake?

Bubble-bursting - there's been much talk this year of people living in (political/cultural) bubbles, and being forced by events to confront the views of those outside those bubbles.

Earthquakes start somewhere and then trigger faults in other directions. So while the first earthquake was in north Canterbury the energy release quickly travelled north as this youtube simulation shows.

It’s a good one Bart. I’ve not noticed 4714 to be much crazier than any other year, The UK’s on again off again relationship with a Europe they could never totally commit to in the first place is off again, more fake news and lies, and the USA elected another racist, misogynist whack job for president following a campaign that was more or less a localisation ripped straight out of the populist playbook of the ex-PM we had for the past 8 years. Meanwhile the far more considerate pastime of tapping plastic seems to have displaced shouting at TV screens, and those in the throws of that might feel justified in feeling that the distance between our two great nations feels closer than it ever has been.
Outside the largely monolingual English speaking world things have been business as usual, except within the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs where the mandarins who seem to have lucked upon a new toy to distract them from their endless whoring. In the meantime the readership -still in complete denial that our civilization jumped the shark a decade or so back – and so hypnotised by this double China vision: pretending to be one: pretending to be two – remains so engrossed in speculation as to who loves who the most that they – once again – neglect to ask their own leaders to “show me the money”.
