Russell Brown, in reply to
whatever privilege goggles (sorry, Russell, know you hate the term but there’s a point coming up) you bring to the table and consciously widen your frame of reference.
I really, really don't hate the term or the concept. But I am sometimes troubled by the way some people use both to shut down others' voices. Watching relatively privileged people hurl the word at each other is an unedifying sight.

it might be in a sense more permissable for straight cis women to blog about sex and sexuality than it is for straight cis men to blog about sex and sexuality
Or maybe 'cos when men do it it's called bragging?
Actually I tend to think that it's because men in NZ have no culture of talking about sex and sexuality that isn't completely trite.

Yes, I was wondering that too. An uncomfortable subject for many men?

I don't think it's necessarily uncomfortable. It's just that with no habit of ever talking about such things there is no starting point. Kind of a self perpetuating limitation.
Part of it has to be an inherent prudishness in the kiwi culture but that doesn't explain the difference between genders.
The same problem exists with conversations about emotions. There is no habit of it for men, therefore it's difficult. Unfortunately there are times in ones life where having someone you are able to talk to about emotions is necessary.

Save TVNZ7 pins last hopes on Mai Chen.

Great to hear you have managed to keep the show running on TV3. Now lets hope the geoblocking is not turned on!
I can't say I've had any cause to try in TV3's case for some years but I guess I do now

Dunno how it is for you, but TV3 is the only NZ tv channel I can actually watch here. Can't figure out why, but it seems to be a technical issue. TVNZ loads so slowly and unreliably to make it not worth the wait. Maori TV loads reliably, but so slowly as to render it useless for anything not essential. TV3 I can stream with only the occasional, short-lived glitch. But only good for news and current affairs.
I have been thinking lately that it would be nice for some reasonably big-ish TV channel to tell the rest of its industry which lake to jump into and go all online all the time with no geoblocking and no licencing to other channels. That strikes me as being far more 21st century than what they're all doing now.

Chris,
I haven’t really had any reason to check any NZ channels barring TVNZ for some years, outside of the quakes, but I’ve just checked TV3 and I seem to be able to view 3News in London, without any special measures. So that seems to tally with your experience.
I can’t see a NZ channel taking such a leap, unless the overseas audience is going to be reliably small, as otherwise the cost of serving such media would be rather costly. Actually, anyone have any figures on NZ tv on demand’s overseas audience figures, or the cost of serving such media overseas?
I would suspect that the cost of uploading to Youtube (as per Media 7’s current approach) would be limited to the time it took to convert and upload video, alongside any time it took to create the show channel. I don’t think Youtube charges for channels that have low audience figures (or at least, they did not use to).

As a longterm but longago & sexually ambiguous barfly in
West Coast pubs, I found most males were happy to boast of - but
not really share- their sexual experiences with their mates in a
convivial atmosphere. They talked lovingly & knowledgably
about vehicles and guns with each other- -
There may be hope yet for Backbenchers. But seriously folks, is sport the only local content that SKY provides?
Levy to fund public TV a no-go
However, Broadcasting Minister Craig Foss said the Government would not consider a levy.
"The Government is satisfied with the current contestable funding model through NZ On Air to support public broadcasting in New Zealand."
Sky Television spokeswoman Kirsty Way said the commercial broadcaster would not support a levy. Sky showed a large amount of local content and invested significantly in local productions; its sport budget alone was $80m last year.
"We are investing without the need for any sort of fee to be charged."
Meanwhile, Sky has confirmed it is in preliminary talks with TVNZ about the Back Benches programme moving from TVNZ7 to Prime.
"But we've got a fair way to go to finalise anything at this stage," Ms Way said.
Prime was attracted to the show because it was locally produced.
"It really brings politics to a younger audience and makes it really accessible for that age group."

If it’s content that’s generated by the channel, they can. But for, eg, TV3, that’s pretty much only news and current affairs. anything else- licencing hell :)
(Eg NZ on Air would probably not agree- kills any possible future revenue stream dead. And obviously not going to fly for content bought from another provider- without massive payment.)
Youtube: not only are channels free- you can make (tiny!) amounts of money from them. So that’s a reasonable option, I’d think, for any channel generating its own programming, which wants to increase viewers, and possibly make tuppence here and there. Youtube/Google are aware of the limitations of ‘short-view’ programming- people get lots of opportunities to leave- and actively courting longer, more ‘professional’ (tv-like) content. Hence putting US$100m into new start-up channels.
Not necessarily working that well, though…
ETA:Sky has confirmed it is in preliminary talks with TVNZ about the Back Benches programme moving from TVNZ7 to Prime.
Great news too! Even though I dislike the role of Sky in NZ television market, and suspect the deal will involve NZ on Air paying the entire production cost, while Sky/Prime reaps the advertising benefits and 'kudos' for 'sponsoring' a local show...

Lilith; I drove through the McKenzie Basin today (en route from Christchurch to Wanaka, to add cinemas to http://cinemasofnz.info) but didn't see any Sky. In fact, I saw little sky due to low and dense fog much of the way--except for one magic moment near Mt. Hutt, when the murk lifted, to reveal magnificent, snow-laden mountains,

Hmm. Sorry to hear that. Network outage? ;-)
I once saw an amazing sky on a cloudy day driving from Ohau to Tekapo, approaching Lake Pukaki from the South -- the underside of the clouds over Pukaki were a rich turquoise from the reflected light.
I somehow neglected to take a photo, which I regret!
ETA: navigators in the high latitudes have sometimes used reflections on clouds for navigation, known as water sky and ice blink. Cool, huh?
