  • Lucy Stewart, in reply to Chris Waugh,

Actually, 99% of the time I was just looking for highlights, but denied about half of that time.

See, I can just about understand them geoblocking the highlights - though that's probably because I had legal, cheap-ish access to all the games if I wanted 'em, thanks to a decent online streaming deal in the US. What I couldn't understand was geoblocking any news item from NZ which contained *even a few seconds of RWC footage*, even when the game itself was not the focus of the item. That's just petty.

They had free live games on Guangdong sports channel, the commentators seemed pretty fresh but they loved our Piri.

  • David Chittenden,

Congratulations Russell and the team! That is very good news. Media 7 is the only show from NZ that I watch while I'm out of the country for a few years. I really hope the on demand thing won't be geo-blocked for Media 3 ...

  • Damian Christie,

It is great news for Media 7/3 - well done Russell. And credit to TV3 for taking it on. Not only do they get some great programming, they also get the chance to stick it to TVNZ for letting its public service programming slip away. I'd imagine the latter was at least a small consideration - the icing on the cake :)

The difference between Media 7 and Back Benches is that we're made by TVNZ, produced internally as part of News & Current Affairs. So when the announcement was made to close TVNZ 7, Top Shelf and RB did what any good production company would do, and hit the phones, worked contacts, tried to find a new home. Whereas TVNZ clearly aren't going to do that, at least not outside of TVNZ. We lack, if you will, a 'champion'. And given neither Wallace nor I own the concept/name, it's not ours to shop around.

  • Hilary Stace,

That's great news but can I make a suggestion? Please can you have some more girls on your panel? What about bringing some local women from your audience onto the stage - people like Jackie and Sofie?

    the argot naught...

Don’t like old guys trying to be hip, though.

admittedly Ace, Boss and Hip are all older than Russell, but were
an accepted part of the parlance & patois of his generation...
it's these young folk that create a flipped out adhocracy by
appropriating and messing with the etymology...

  • Tim Michie,

Very happy for you and the team Russell and for me as viewer.

I saw The Nation had added media comment but so brief in comparison it's great to know TV3 aren't attempting to duplicate what you've already built.

  • Clint Fern,

Thought you didn't look as disappointed as you should at the end of last nights show when I thought there was only two to go. Well done, great that at least part of 7 will live on.

  • Richard Aston,

Great news for real news Russell .
Will Media 3 be the same as Media 7 - didn't have to compromise too much to get on a commercial channel?
Will you still be able to piss people off in other words.

    What becomes a legend?

…at least part of 7 will live on

    That raises a good point.
Does anyone know what will happen to all the 7-generated stuff on the TVNZ on-demand site?
Will the TVNZ stuff remain (like Back Benches ) and does the rest revert to the originating Production Companies?
    Collected show DVDs?
Hopefully people will still have access (somehow) to what has gone before – being mindful of the folly of flushing both baby and bathwater…

…or are they taking the Bysshe….

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: “Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away”.

To be fair, I don't think it's for lack of effort. While things are a lot better than they used to be, there's still serious gender/diversity gaps at senior editorial and management in media. And in panel shows like Media 3, you can have a perfectly balanced panel for a topic and have it all fall apart on the morning of production day for all kinds of reasons from twitchy management to airport closures.

  • Jackie Clark, in reply to Hilary Stace,

Hilary! No! Frighten me half to death it would. And when speaking under pressure, ie in front of big crowds, cameras, or both, I tend to tear up and not speak well at all. Big old bummer that would be.

In my experience, you throw up before, you throw up afterwards but you’re OK during the event yourself (no matter how convinced you are you were a babbling brook of imbecility).

Not sure that helped, but the truth seldom does. :)

Go on --you would be great. But avoid wearing striped shirts.
If we are looking to gender equality, could we still make some exclusions--Michelle Boag or Joanne Black, for example?

  • Myles Thomas, in reply to Russell Brown,

This is great news. It'll be interesting to see your ratings - especially on Sat morning. Also you'll have to turn the heat up at times on your own bosses so please - no more self-censoring.

As for Saving TVNZ 7 we'll take it to the wire - you never know. And then it'll be bring back 7, not so much because TVNZ 7 is perfect (it isn't) but because it's all that most Kiwis know of public service TV channels.

Here's to another 5 years at TV3! Good luck
