  • Polity: Key Derangement Syndrome…,

Rob you say "And the process was a dog at every turn"

Are you suggesting that the process should be similar to countries like Canada, South Africa, Sri Lanka, India etc where the change was decided by parliament or by a government appointed committee?

I don't vote for Key but at least the current process has involved people voting.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Gobshite vs Adele, in reply to Russell Brown,

They're so much better but the good bits are the Jamie xx ones, so I'd rather listen to his other stuff which to my ears is much better. What Adele herself is responsible for doesn't appeal.

"But they do both sound like mashups of an Oasis song with 'Tomorrow Never Knows' :-)"

I think you may mean a mashup of a Chems song with Tomorrow Never Knows, - either way better to rip off that song than a Moby one!

I'll stick with your other recommends and leave Adele to the masses who adore her.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Gobshite vs Adele,

Well your write up got me to try and get Adele, I played the two tracks and they do nothing at all for me.

Rolling sounds like a Moby knock off and the new one just is far too MOR to keep on with.

Gallagher doesn't often talk sense but the mouthy manc was spot on with "I just don’t see what all the fuss is about."

And these two collaborations with the Chem Brothers are far more interesting than Adele.

  • Hard News: Mediaworks: The only horizon…, in reply to Bart Janssen,

I'd always enjoyed it after a southern holiday, although certainly not exclusively of other Pinots, those associations are now overridden finding out it was Weldons own vinyard.

Fortunate to live in a wine producing region and so our local supermarkets sometimes have cancelled export orders which can lead to very occasional amazing and cheap Pinot on a seasonal basis.

  • Hard News: Mediaworks: The only horizon…,

The comments that Mediaworks management view coverage of Pike River as fatiguing and the Chch earthquakes and child poverty undeserving of in depth coverage I find disgraceful and as such I have decided to not buy anymore of Mark Weldons, unfortunately excellent, Pinot Noir (Terra Sancta).

Are there any products linked either to him or Julie Christie that could be similarly avoided?

  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks,

A pretty good substitute for pinenuts (when they're $100 a kg) are sunflower seeds, toasted of course.

Item that rises well above gadget status has to be a rice cooker. Got one with Flybuys and now is an essential. Great rice every time and frees up gas rings. Also makes passable risotto.

I'll add my name to the supporters of Urban Hippie miso, but direct from Nelson Market ;)

Store cupboard essentials, pickled ginger, fried shallots and Kecip Manis. Make a great stir-fry every time.

Pomegranate molasses and homemade preserved lemons (or limes - had a glut and tried them instead) have masses of uses.

  • Hard News: Media3 Nights,

This is good news. Weekends always busy and not so good for remembering to watch / set recorder. Wednesdays much better. Looking forward to it.

  • Hard News: The not-so-Evil Empire,

The only bit of Apple kit that I have is an iPad which I use without having entered credit card details, and it works fine.

I'm very far from an Apple fanboy - I have a self built PC system with quality parts which I find better than factory built Pc / Apple systems. I also find the Apple OS doesn't work how I'd like and for my work my system is far more suitable. I find the prices Apple charge for their components (two of my neighbours have had to replace out of warranty DVD writers) ridiculous - Foxconn brings into mind FotC "Think about it".

Having said that, I don't see Apple as any worse than a lot of players in changing terms and conditions - certain social media seems to be far worse. Its a matter of being careful about what you agree to. I do see the ability of apps to give a free trial period and then start charging as a con if there is no confirmation for this - however this would appear that the app creator is to blame (if it happens).

So Apple < Paragon but also Apple < Evil Empire.

  • Hard News: Media7 will soon be Media3,

Thought you didn't look as disappointed as you should at the end of last nights show when I thought there was only two to go. Well done, great that at least part of 7 will live on.
