A part of the internet where you're not mocked for mistakes - good to see stereotypes being challenged.

Speaking of which, on my recent visit to Auckland I was totally let down. Everyone was bloody friendly, it was sunny and the traffic flowed fine. Sorry, been waiting a few weeks for a chance to segue into that.</threadjack>

  • Hard News: What the kids do, in reply to Jackie Clark,

The thing I found most bizarre in recent times at the local dairy was when the owner put up advertising for Cocaine – the caffeine drink.

The dairy owner is a friend, originally from Gujarat, who also sells Kronic. I’m pretty sure knowing him that he would not sell (knowingly) to under 18s but theft is possible. Being a vegan to him maybe the worst thing is having to sell meat pies, but margins being what they are he’ll sell anything that hes allowed to. Being in a nice part of Nelson, there really aren’t the issues to the same extent as the urban centres – the big problem here at the moment is alcohol fuelled violence.

I reckon you could get a NZ politician to 'do an Amess' and raise the issue of a made-up drug in parliament. Katrina Shanks / Paul Quinn would be pretty likely to do it.

  • Hard News: You know what ..., in reply to richard,

It was vengeance pure and simple. If justice is killing someone who may have ordered an attack which killed civilians then Bill Clinton, for example, should be shot for the bombing of the Sudanese aspirin factory. There may be one or two more cases involving US / European leaders as well.

I've no sympathy for bin Laden, but would have none for Rumsfeld either.

  • Cracker: RIght On., in reply to Raymond A Francis,

    His position is that he is not;

The same position taken by Pauline Hanson and Nick Griffin.

While Brash is plainly not as extreme as those two, is as just as convincing in the "I'm not a racist but..." stakes.

  • Muse: Hey Greg O'Connor, Krup You!, in reply to Steve Barnes,

I am guessing you are Caucasian, I know well those that feel differently.

100% correct. Oh dear I'm not doing this very well. My first post was trying to slate O'Connor / Collins and I came across as 'all police are terrible'. Trying to address this I seem to have gone they're all fluffy puppies. Better be more precise.

OK, this can't be ambiguous and I'm happy to stand by it - Greg O'Connor is a nasty twatcock who harms the interest of police union members and the wider public. I see no excuse for his inflamatory stance with regard to almost any issue. OK maybe I'm being inflamatory but I'm not in any position of official responsibility.

  • Muse: Hey Greg O'Connor, Krup You!, in reply to Jackie Clark,

Sorry Jackie, I must have been a bit opaque and mentioning that song certainly would have muddied the intention. I wasn't denying that there are a lot of problems with the attitude to the police by part of the population which a very large percentage of them certainly don't deserve.

I just have no sympathy with the O'Connor / Collins types (most of whom aren't involved on the frontline) who help create conflict. I remember Meurant coming out in an interview saying that there was a whole us against them attitude through parts of the police force and of course the police have improved since then but I'd guess there are still elements that would promote that kind of thing to the detriment of the good cops like your friends.

Living 'at the epicentre of the civilized world' (c) Smithies, I have to say all the cops I've come into contact with here have been good as gold with me, so I'd pick that most of the bad ones are in positions like O'Connors.

Although they may have been more indie-than-thou this ancient lyric by McCarthy seems pertinent.

    My name is Dave
    I killed my brother
I whacked an axe through his head
On the hottest day of the year
    My blood was boiling
    I said, "You're dying"
    And so the blood flowed

    I'm in jail
The press were eager to question me
"How could you do such a thing?"

    My father hated me
He always took my brother's side
For Christmas he would get a car
    And I'd be given 50p
    All alone in my room
    Just a Bible
Of Cain and and Abel I'd read

How my heart bled for Cain
He had problems but God ignored them
    It made me so mad

    I'm in jail
    When the story broke
    Placards read
"Now should the bible be banned?"

    I'm in jail
    When the story broke
    Placards read
"Now should the bible be banned?"

The Home Secretary is looking closely into it
Could a copycat killer copy the Book of Genesis?

    Should the bible be banned
    To keep the peace?
