There seems to be a lot missing from the various Youtube stories circulating - mainly facts.
As in what rate is being offered and does it differ from that the majors have signed up for... and you know the other important details needed before one can make an informed decision as to if they truly are evil or just misunderstood on this count - as much as I am inclined to rage against the machine by default and side with the indies so far its been a very one sided story.
That 45th sounds like a mint night out, Sunflower is up there on my fave songs ever list

Fair point. But neither side has released the numbers they're haggling over, so it's hard to tell. The fact that Beggars Group is rejecting the deal seems significant though.

If they try this one on in Europe, I suspect the EU will have something to say on competition grounds.

Things have been a bit fiddly for indie bands in Youtube for a while, but this will just make things worse.
More than a couple of times over the years someone's tried to post a Headless Chickens' clip on their F/b page, only for it to be denied because it's "not available in this country" or "the artist has not given their permission" or some such.
Chris Matthews has then tried to contact F/b and say "Well, I'm the artist, it's ok with me" and gotten nowhere. There's all sorts of fiddly legal things involved and basically Chris' hands are tied, damn it.
I'm para-phrasing a bit, but that's the basic gist. Russell, I'm sure if you contact Chris himself he'll give a more accurate, detailed account.

This is an artefact of the buyback of Flying Nun from Warner Music. As part of the deal, Warners retained distribution of the catalogue. Warners is also the only one of the "big three" to not have long since reached a Content ID agreement with YouTube, so stuff it claims is generally blocked on request. It seems this can only be resolved by Flying Nun communicating with Warners on a case-by-case basis.
I'll see if Ben Howe can swing by with a fuller explanation, but that's the situation as I understand it.

Two decades of consolidation means that the “big three” control most of the copyrights that YouTube wants. They’ve made their agreements and hundreds of indie labels have been presented with non-negotiable deals substantially inferior to those the three majors were offered. That leaves some important artists, most notably those on the Beggars Group roster (including Adele, Radiohead and Jack White), outside the tent.
It's long past time for President Obama to dust off the Sherman Act. That is, if he hasn't gotten cold feet.

Weirdly or not... Youtube has over the past 18 months become a whole lot more user friendly for labels and artists down here and I assume globally
The Nun/Warners thing isn't unique.. bloody frustrating for those who just want to see/hear the music. and the artists themselves
It can be very hard (understatement) to reclaim and change settings to material already claimed by someone else - especially when ownership can be complicated. Something I thought was getting cleaned up and made more user friendly by youtube and rights holders themselves

Which is why what's happening now is such a retrograde step. They're undoing all the progress, it seems to me.

I can't help but wonder if like so many before them (refer big retail, other digital platforms et al) they've decided that due to the huge number of indies its all just a bit too hard, especially for automated systems given the huge volume of music from so many diverse sources... negotiate with the big indies, of which this could all be but an opening gambit, and they can then ignore the rest
I can imagine someone at Youtube HQ reading all the spotify payment articles of which their have been hundreds from generally indie artists and labels and thinking "fuck em" we'll just not have them aboard our streaming service

I'm not fussed by youtube as long as I can still watch all them ye olde clips - it's a fantastic tool for diggers.
for instance, just grabbed myself a stonking stash of 2nd hand 7s at Southbound and got to check them out via the interwebs. rather excited to get them home.

Isn't most music on youtube blocked in Germany because the performing rights association there wont accept their shitty terms? Maybe ASCAP, PRS, APRA etc should try and get some sort of world wide action against this monster. Blah blah free internet and all that, but the reality is that this website is probably the biggest "streaming service" in the world right now and it makes up it's own rules.

It's a bit more complicated, but wiki has some of it here.
GEMA is a weird beast, very staunch but sometimes the artists are less than GEMA-positive as stand-offs end up with everyone losing. A high percentage of nothing is ...
That said, Germany pays writers better than just about anywhere for performance.

You don't have to be a corporate CEO to see that coming, and I can't a reason for all this needless drama beyond (as Billy Bragg put it in the OP) "corporate hubris." It makes as much sense to me as Amazon's latest round of outraged pearl-clutching at the very idea that publishers like Hachette aren't that interested in fluffing Amazon's bottom line.
