I saw Suzi Q live at the Auckland Town Hall in 1974 when I was 10, it was my first proper gig and she was awesome.

It's somewhat ironic that for Record Store day there'll be 2,000 copies of the Dunedin Double and 1,000 copies of Bored Games' Who Killed Colonel Mustard ? ep, considering there were probably less than that number pressed originally.

It is pleasantly surprising to see the Dunedin Double repressed, either way, as the Sneaky Feelings' masters were long thought to have vanished into the ether.

That Quatro track is a keeper... the Suzi Quatro Story compilation was top of my christmas list for 1975. Reckon things went downhill after that for Suzi with her Happy Days cameo and that song with the guy from Smokie...

My Dunedin Double is still in good nick so I won't be after that on Record Store Day - I'll be saving up for the LCD Soundsystem live set, if any copies reach our shores in time.

Not completely sure about young Thomston on that evidence but I'm glad someone else takes "808s & Heartbreak" as seriously as I do.

I want both (and the other kiwi re-issues) and yet (collector gene) my original copies are fine...

I counted 405 Record Store Day special releases... which kinda makes me despair at the entire concept of the day - who is it actually helping? Ebay resellers it seems

I don't have vinyl any more, but this was one of the albums that introduced me to the famed "dunedin sound". The Chills tracks are still good, the Verlaines "Cheat Yourself" is still one of my fav tracks. The Sneaky Feelings tracks don't really stick with me, but they persuaded me to buy their other albums so they can't be all bad. And the album art was great, it's very teenager-accessible.

I expect I'll be buying the FLAC version this time, it's about time I went shopping again.

the Verlaines “Cheat Yourself” is still one of my fav tracks.

Mine too. I think it's the standout from the whole record.

I recently had a bad experience with Suzi Q: on a road trip up to Christchurch, I slipped a CD into the machine, but her voice was so shrill I couldn't listen to it. I was wondering if I was mis-remembering my enjoyment of her music, but these tracks suggest that the problem was with the crappy recording - so thanks.

This talk about the Dunedin Sound makes me wish I had paid more attention to what was happening around me when I lived here from 1981 - 1985: who knew I was living through something that would come to be regarded as something of a musical revolution? Others, probably, but certainly not me. Idiot.

JPSE. I was a fan and took this photo at the Gladstone in 1986. They put on a good and colourful show.
I was also friends with them and ended up playing with them for a few gigs and tours, while Dave Yetton was away. Had an amazing fun time and personal JPS experience! Got to see other fav bands, like Straitjacket Fits and Headless Chickens heaps.

I dunno, JPSE... I'm fond of "I like rain" but boys with guitars is not so much my thing, and I was working O week when they were in their "loudest band ever" phase which didn't really endear them to me.

One great memory from those days is Shona Liang playing orientation at Canterbury and being booked into the upper level, which has a capacity of about 200. By the time she started the queue went down two floors worth of stairs and out into the main area. People were (rightly) pissed that she wasn't moved, but the organisers only really realised she'd be that popular when the queue formed. And you can't really kick the headline act for the night off the main stage. IIRC she was also flying off the next day to another O week, so we all lost out. Well, lots of other people missed out (I had already arranged to have a slot spare in my lighting schedule so I could just watch her perform. And being a senior volunteer I could just wave my pass and use the "staff only" lift to bypass the queue :).

Has anyone else noticed the penchant for new stars to take up stage names?

Oh yeah, I have a few albums and like a few tracks, they're just not right up my personal list. The way, say, Era or Shona Laing are. I mean, "White Colonial Middle-Class Anarchist" as a wee hint to, well, us? There's bands where I don't really have a favorite track because I like so much of their work, and there's bands that are (for me) one hit wonders. Like Guns'n'Roses... there's "Patience" and there's a bunch of stuff that impels me to hit the "shuffle" button.

Russel's Friday listen list often annoys me because there's one good track, but it's from an artist whose entire output is five tracks. I'm much happier finding a great new artist and being able to grab a couple of hours worth of their music. All that waiting to see whether they keep producing good music, it's just not right in the internet age!
