I'd review the book, but I really don't want to buy it.
Can I write a Wishartian review based on a warped fantasy of what it might contain?

frankly, your review would likely have a higher market value that wishart's trip through the looking glass.

Yeah... Poneke wasn't the only one who had a quick browse in Borders. I had to go stroke the shrink-wrapped hetero wank mags to feel clean again.
And for once in my life, I think I'm in the majority here: I just don't care what Helen Clark does with her pussy in private with however many consenting adults of whatever gender(s) she requires to achieve orgasm. I'm never going to get the pathology of a certain type of heterosexual man who has an intimate, and obsessive, interest in girl-on-girl action, man-on-man buggery and the kind of extreme kink that triggers my gag reflex (and not in a fun way).
Danyl Mclauchlan deserves big ups for his relentless masochism, but trying to have a rational debate with Wishart is an exercise in futility akin to engaging Tom Cruise on dealing with post-partum depression.

Hey I've got Send You on vinyl too - who knew it was worth so much cash?
I think every record collector secretly dreams of retiring on the back of their collection one day... walking in to Real Groovy with armfuls of vinyl and jumping out, clicking your heels in mid-air with pockets stuffed with cash.

OK, I’ll say it.
Does anyone else think that the Elim church was perhaps too open with the media during this period of greif?
The televising of the assembly when they read out the names of the victims being one case that springs to mind.

indeed. my one trip to wishart-land involving him slipping into a faux-cockney accent as soon as i questioned his comments about me on a post.
this then slipped to taking the piss out of my name, more faux-cockney, and general evasion.
i'd say the guy's one sandwich short of a picnic, but i'm inclined to think the picnic is probably up on a doctors bench somewhere, and the basket is AWOL.
all we're left with is the smell of pickled onions.

Indeed I do -- but as my late Granny used to say, just because you can do something, it doesn't mean you should. Surely, being in a senior editorial role is exercising editorial judgement. And isn't part of that judgement considering the saw that 'not everything we presume the public is interested in is a matter of public interest'?
Perhaps I'm showing my age here, but I remember when the Auckland Star ran a photo of gumboots lined up on the front doorstep of a man and his children who were killed in an accident on the Auckland Harbour Bridge. And it drew a furious response from readers who felt it was not only an invasion of privacy but a tasteless intrusion on the grief on the bereaved family.
Could you even imagine that happening today?
-
BTW, I don't mean to sound like I'm dumping on the Elim Church, the school or any of the parents of the victims who spoke to the media. IMO, they all behaved with admirable dignity and grace under circumstances I wouldn't wish on my worse enemy.
I just wish the media had backed off.
-

i guess we just use the 'off' button these days. i didn't watch any of the coverage, so wasn't outraged by it. however that does still leave the question of whether or not it should have been aired at all. it's a bit like the problem with wishart's book - you have to consume the material before you can make a detailed complaint. most people are just not that interested.

At least the family of the guy killed by lightening last week were saved this cheap voyeurism because of the bigger tragedy, which fortuitously involved youth.
Not sure I totally agree with you about the dignity bit Craig, but if I say what I really think about the constant “They were too good for this world” theme throughout the week I’ll probably get into trouble…

My review:
Absolute Power brings down Government...
Could someone please let them know?
(ok, haven't read it, even at speed, but I would like a prize)

There are days when I think we're all too good for any world we've got to share with Ian Wishart and his tawdry arse-wipe publications. Unfortunately, you can't treat 'this world' like a particularly ugly Christmas present: put it on Trade Me and spend the proceeds on gin and cigarettes, or 're-gift' it to a particularly turd-like relation.

As much as it amazes me somebody would write the kind of things that Wishart does, what amazes me even more is that there are obviously people out there willing to pay for it...I can't begin to imagine the world view that comes along with 'Oh boy, Wishart's new book comes out tomorrow, can't wait!'. I guess it takes all sorts...

Well Elim Church aside - I thought Mark Sainsbury's comments right at the beginning when he had to put it all in HIS context, illustrated what the media had gained from all this openness - better coverage and ability to put whatever spin they wanted. His comments were - there was a the lightning story up North and then this story. Either way it would be a fantastic story... blah blah blah.
Two great stories on one day - his cup overfloweth
Has anyone timed the coverage of all the funerals. I feel the TV teams felt the story was over, but had to cover all funerals, each one getting less time - am I correct? -
Not so sure about the diminishing time given to each funeral Jean.
The father on Tuesday who said he hoped who ever received his daughter’s donated eye “also received her vision” seemed to get a fair bit of airtime.

Good show Russell - interesting panel discussion, shame you couldn't get further into the Hansford/Listener story. The best so far I thought.
Your second button down open however? Too distracting. If you're going to keep doing that, you need a big medallion and flares to match.

Last time I read Investigate (in the news agent) it was on the story about the Qantas cabin crew/prostitute. He had half his facts wrong that anyone in the Airline Industry could pick at a glance. Drawing a very long bow as to what happened his basic facts of someone had one job and moonlighted at another. A state of affairs that I'm sure didn't lasted a very long time.
Is his maxim "Never let the facts get in the way of a salacious story"
When D4J is on your side your've gotta reasses your position.

I just had to go and look at TBR.cc
Investigate magazine's breaking wind forum, thanks for the heads up about Daddy4 he really is vile eh?
I did notice that every time Danyl seemed to make a valid point Whisart would say "Buy the Book" well if he wants us to read his, oh so important, essay why doesn't he just publish on the web? is he that desperate for cash that he is willing to let this astounding piece of work filter down to us mere mortals by way of the discount bin at the Warehouse? -
Congrats on the Show Russell.
It is bloody good viewing. I thought i'd have a quick look, and next thing half my lunch hour was gone.
Sainsbury defending the indefensible question stuck in my craw though. It is quite funny that your chair supplier gets a credit, good on tehm for helping you out.
Has your Listener connection become strained as a result of the story?

Absolute Power brings down Government...
Could someone please let them know?If you could squeeze that into the six word format it might be even more awesome. The good news is you don't have to include the title - it's a given.
