Talking of skating...I ran into this yesterday.
Good to see Levi still ripping it up in Auckland.

Wanted to be the first to post the wonderful video of John Clarke doing Julia Gillard's first interview but having some technical problems with Flash player so here is the link from Red Alert instead.

I'm looking forward to seeing the next issue of Metro under the guidance of Simon Wilson. Things can only get better with the last issue (June, sub-titled "The Money Issue") providing a vast cache of ammunition for everyone south of the Bombay Hills who likes to dump on Aucklanders. I have difficulty in recalling a more inane, vacuous issue of the magazine which sported "articles" such as a Remuera Wealth Map, who the richest people in Auckland are and everything you need to know about the local plastic surgery scene.
Interestingly, IMHO one of the few articles in the issue worth reading was Simon Wilson's article on Vanda Vitali and the problems at the Auckland Museum. -
Here it is:
I propose a standing ovation for those gerberas.

3410,
May I draw attention to Sir Pete's Film Commission review?
NZH: Call for overhaul of Film Commission.
Stuff: Jackson review criticises Film Commission.
Also, here is a picture of a newborn elephant.

Typical Bindel, has just paid a Glastonbury ticket with the sole intent of seeing Snoop and then states that she's not going to spend another cent on him until he turns into Bono. Right....
She's got it right though, he's got more funk in the trunk than just about any of his contemporaries and he's always had great taste in producers (Dre etc..). I tend to treat his lyrics as cartoon stupidity on a South Park level though, sometimes funny, often baiting.
Eminem presents a similar conundrum although his tunes aren't nearly as interesting. But when he's clever, he's very good. And when he's bad he's awful.

Also on film review: Gordon Campbell: On The Jackson Film Commission review
Or, speaking of music downloads, I wrote a song about the Gulf Oil Spill and made what I hope is a charmingly amateurish recording. Remixable!
Actually this issue of Werewolf has a bunch of weekend-read goodness.

Does metro have an online version of the magazine? I'd be keen to subscribe to it (and willing to pay for it), even in PDF form.
The physical mag (http://www.magshop.co.nz/Metro), though nice and uniquely large in size (and definitively Metro), is a bit clumsy and not ideal for shipping to Aus each month...
I wonder whether there's room for someone to setup an 'ibook' NZ magazine section (real groove, metro...), minimizing the transition to ebook subscriptions for publishers and maybe utilising DRM for the paranoid. Maybe this already exists?

Also, here is a picture of a newborn elephant.
That link might need a warning. That's a dead prem baby elephant. Or a fake.
At birth baby elephants stand about three feet tall and weight 30 - 50kg.

You certainly may. I'm sure there's PASers out there who are much more informed about the local film industry than I. but while the report most definitely is *cough* provocative and full of think-food, am I the only one wondering if there's some very unrealistic expectations of the Film Commission? And at the risk of being bitchy, if Jackson wants to talk about "rewarding mediocrity" then I hope he got paid DGA scale for The Lovely Bones. As indie producer (and mother of the New Queer Cinema) Christine Vachon said on Kim Hill's show recently, if there was some fool-proof algorithm for determining which films would be artistic and commercial successes, everyone would be doing it.

Oh, no! But it's smiling!
Sorry.

Which is why, as I've always said, they need an entry-level funding stratum which funds a lot more filmmakers for cheap, less-than-commercial projects. That way they'd have a much better idea of the talent that should receive the real money, but I suppose that wouldn't be "professional" enough for them.

Taiwanese newspaper Apple Daily have done another of their news story animations. This time it's Al Gore and the masseuse:
More or less safe for work, by the way.

Well, I subscribe to Orion Magazine - their digital subscription. I get a sort of PDF copy mailed to me bi-monthly (their schedule), but I usually download it and read it on my laptop.
The technology is there. I'll ask Simon the next time I see him.

This is my favourite version of the Doctor Who theme: played with electricity!
The device used here is sometimes known as a "Zeusaphone", because of the, uh, lightning bolts!
According to Wikipedia:
"Zeusaphone, also called a Thoremin, is trademark for a high-frequency, solid state Tesla coil, when its spark discharge is digitally modulated so as to produce musical tones. The high-frequency signal acts in effect as a carrier wave; its frequency is significantly above human-audible sound frequencies, so that digital modulation is able to reproduce a recognizable pitch. The musical tone results directly from the passage of the spark through the air.
This is a variant of the plasma arc loudspeaker, designed for public spectacle and sheer volume rather than fidelity."

Did anyone else get the Siemens cone up on the Al Gore clip?

I happened to catch John Barnett on TVNZ7 last night- I think.
Thought he said some interesting things. I won't paraphrase and I havent got time time today to navigate the TVNZ7 website.
So I'll just post interspecies sex.
You have been warned!!!!!!!!!!! -

More like 100kg. Here's an actual birth and it's not gentle:

After skimming through the review, I've noticed that a number of the quotes attributed by the media to the review's authors - including the above - are in fact the comments of others quoted in the review.

Just to add to the list of Do What You Gotta Do covers, there's an Okkervil River version available for free download too. Link here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Opportunities_MixtapeThere's John Cale, Serge Gainsbourg, Joni Mitchell, Sandy Denny and Randy Newman covers too.

But without Metro, how else would we know that apparently not all lesbians look like dykes? And that some lesbians also like men? And gosh, I'm sure it's a coincidence that all the ones pictured were rather attractive.

It's gone back to A4 size now

'Specially for Danielle, to help her with that bad-feminist thing ... the Xx vs Notorious B.I.G.
Heh, awesome. That "fulfilled my fantasies without that nigga Mr Roarke"!
(I like this "Russell discovers cool shit for me to listen to" service. No finder's fee?)
Here everyone, have a listen to Method Man's 'Uh Huh' over a 'You Know My Name (Look Up the Number)' sample. Because I love the whole Wu-Tang Vs The Beatles album so very, very much.
(And while we're speaking of Bad Feminism, and the Wu, Ol' Dirty Bastard's 'Got Your Money' may be my favourite Bad Feminist Song ever, and I know alllllll the lyrics to that one. I feel so bad. But it feels so good.)

Thanks, Tim!
Yes, seconded. And there's a free download of track one from Phil Selway's (Radiohead) album Familial for download just back there <<<-
Dr Who? Just to counter the disturbing Zoological links above, here's the bloody Timelords.
