One of the best discoveries was a little park devoted to journalists and the newspaper business. -

The 24 Hour Church of Elvis was the first virtual place I visited the very first time I used a browser and searched/surfed the net. My first search entry was 'Church of Elvis" which lead me to the 24 Hour Church of Elvis.

Well, it was a little puzzling, to queue in the street for 20 minutes and then go through a convoluted process in the shop itself, all for sugary donuts with daft names like Marshall Mathers and McMiniville. My objective was to get a tshirt for my daughtrer and I can only judge the quality of the fare on the one Bavarian Cream donut I bought. A bit too sweet.
It is interesting how such places gain a certain mystiwque, when in other circumstance they would be run-of-the-mill shops. One other place I visited years ago was a bar devoted to Klinger from M*A*S*H, in Toledo, Ohio.,
I wonder if it is just an American phenomenon. Nevertheless, I like places with literary or film associations, such as the Jack London bar in Oakland CA, for Jack did once drink there.

In 1993, at the start of our Grand Tour, we went to San Francisco, and I was pretty happy to visit the Vesuvio bar, frequented by Jack Kerouac.
There was a sign above the bar which always stuck with me;
'If you drink to forget, please pay in advance!'

We had a Vesuvio in Chchch in the ’90s
I did the logo and collaged the bar area walls
with copies of posters and images, Bill hammond did
a wall painting in the Teppan Yaki area,
Mark Lander did the colour scheme and
earth toned awning over the bar.
it was a favourite spot for a while…I like this shot from the San Francisco bar

Do you know how Mark is, these days? He taught me art in the 7th form, many moons ago, but an experience I'll never forget. :-)
