  • Lilith __, in reply to Abbie,

Oh Lilith! Do you know the name of that top pink magnolia? It is none other than Mark Jury, named for him when he was but a small boy. We have the original plant in our park here.

Oh how wonderful! :-) The Botanic Gardens' specimen is large and handsome, and wafting a tantalising scent from flowers that are too high to sniff directly!

Yes indeed Nora! Soft and slightly uncanny…

Oh, or possibly siamese twin mice?

Where is it in the Gardens Lilith?

You have a wonderful suite of pics today – I especially like the magnolias looking up and the daffs looking across.

  • Lilith __, in reply to Hebe,

Thanks Hebe! I entered the Gardens over the footbridge from the daffodil woodland, and walked alongside the river towards the Curator's house. The Mark Jury and several others are to the left of the path (ie.facing the river).

The Mark Jury and several others

My Great-Uncle had a fondness for magnolias – he probably arranged to have them planted near his house!
The woodland is lovely in flower. I believe that many of bulbs were planted as the result of fundraising post WW2.
Twenty years or so ago Vicki Buck had the very cool idea of planting bulbs in the median strip of the neglected Linwood Ave, now it bursts into colour at the eastern end every spring.

    flora abunda...

    ...amazing magnolia perule

    I never knew that!
I'd gone with 'furry flower pod' for decades and now I find the floral envelope has such wonderful names: perula, perianth, perigone and calyx...

a rosebud by any other name...
Now I no longer languish outside
    the secret lives of flowers,
but I do not go genital into that,
    good night!

    (sorry Dylan T)

Howdy stranger. You have been spotted by eagle eyed M in our neighbourhood. Is this a flying visit, or are you around next week for neighbourly imbibing?

Apart from the framing, I see a resemblance to yours in my plum tree on Tuesday. Today's sky not at all like this though.

  • BenWilson, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

I recognize the chairs. Pt Erin Pool? Many happy memories of sunburning myself lying on the pebbles in front of those chairs (although they were different chairs back then). The stones would get super hot so we'd wet them a little then lie on them until we'd sucked the heat out, then move along a bit. A time lapse shot would have shown a group of children apparently sliding along the ground on our stomachs, diving in, then getting out further along and repeating.
