Not sure where to place this but the invitation is still on for a PA picnic/get-together at our place on Saturday February 2 2013. To date, there is Jackie + Ben with a people-mover (8 seats) coming (Robyn from Raglan too), which would comprise a rather small gathering. A few 'maybes' too.
So, if you are interested, place your mark on the FB invite. If you don't have access to that place, email me at lealand@waikato.ac.nz.
As most people would be coming south, it would a 90 minute trip to 637 Grey Street, Hamilton East (Grey Street runs parallel to River Road), with possible stops for ice cream at Pokeno and cheese at Mercer.
I will give it a week (we are in Taranaki for Tropfest this weekend), to see if it is a goer. Another weekend is another possibility.

Meanwhile, some not so summery ruins albeit with a great swimming hole not seen in this pic.
That’s up near Warkworth, isn’t it? Always wanted to go there, as we had friends living in the hills above Warkworth for a while. Is it worth the visit?

Very much so but will be busy in the weekends because of the superb quarry pool.
We came across some professional camera people doing still shots and were told it was the setting for a film starring Tommy Lee Jones and about to be released.
You can go to the Warkworth museum in the same area and see a couple of enormous kauri from the car park. Serious photo ops!
I changed my pic to b and w but forgot to save it:)

It's fantastic. Lots of great photo ops too.
But ... the hole, quarried out and flooded decades ago, gets very deep, very quickly. Okay for kids who can swim, others will need an eye kept on them.

stick insects make wonderful pets - all you have to do is provide a largish potted plant they can dine on - preferably indoors ( some birds love 'em a little too much)-
they have some fascinating behaviours (swaying to indicate they are a real twig in a passing breeze) and - when they've finished the plant (and you've carefully released 'em)- you'll find they've left you viable eggs... -

Our ones are majorly parthenogenic - altho' a few are facultative parthenogens and- depending on the number of males around - will reproduce sexually-

Dont think I will sacrifice my indoor plants, but very happy we have a resident Morepork using the building site as it's barn and geckos are becoming common. Still I never know what will show up to surprise me such as this really blurred capture of this lil' bird.
