  • Radiation: New season,

So, um, Torchwood? Whatever happened to the first series, which IIRC TVNZ snapped up to stop Prime from getting it, but it hasn't surfaced :-(

I'm not a Dr. Who fan, but having seen how brilliant the guy from Torchwood was in season 19 of Nevermind the Buzzcocks (on divx from a bit-torrenting friend, in keeping with the current topic), I'd be keen to see it!

  • Hard News: Not so much ironic as outrageous,

Oh hai Mr McCroskie, an article in USA Today says that spanking may lead to sexual problems later:

The analysis of four studies by Murray Straus, co-director of the Family Research Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire-Durham, suggests that children whose parents spanked, slapped, hit or threw objects at them may have a greater chance of physically or verbally coercing a sexual partner, engaging in risky sexual behavior or engaging in masochistic sex, including sexual arousal by spanking.

  • Cracker: Bye Wellington,

John McCain's constant appearences on The Daily Show made me go "oh, he's pretty cool - for a Republican" until I found out about his abortion stance.

I find it sad that those kids are missing out on the real life experiences (through suppression of "bad behaviour") which in the long run could help them to grow.

I think you're putting a bit of a value judgement on it there Sofie. Being unable to get out of bed does not help you grow. Having chemical imbalances corrected so that you can do the things that you would normally do, however, does.

Isn't this because society not only stigmatises mental illness, but also the use of chemicals, legal and illegal, to alter mood?

Exactly, because it's a weak thing to do, and you should just get-the-fuck over it.

I love love love the John Kirwan ads. They really speak to me, and apparently they're speaking to a whole lot of other NZers, especially men, because they're so real and relateable, and he's a fricking All Black, a god amongst men and even he needs help, and that's okay. I think they're pretty much the most helpful public service announcement I've ever seen.

  • Hard News: The drugs don't (always) work,

Prozac, used by 40m people, does not work say scientists

I know in an intelligent audience like this people won't see everything in black and white and absolutes, but I'll say this anyway - the truth is that Prozac __doesn't__ work for everyone. That's why there's a whole range of SSRIs. Prozac didn't work for me because all it made me feel like was numb and completely emotionless. Meanwhile Citalapram makes me feel like me. You don't always get the right drug (or counsellor) straight off the bat, unfortunately.

I do recall that people point to SSRIs + cognitive behavioural therapy as very reliable, but I don't have a citation for you.

Oh yeah, SSRIs by themselves probably won't fix you, but they might make it a little easier to get out of bed and get to your cognitive behavioural therapy appointment. Although god yes, the first couple of weeks after you've been diagnosed and are waiting for the meds to kick in are pretty much harder than the weeks leading up to the diagnosis. But then as Tom Semmens says, there's that glorious glorious invincible euphoria that people who aren't depressed probably don't get to feel.

Craig, I am really, really feeling you today. Making the decision to go on an antidepressant is never easy, even if it's your third round. I'm lucky in that side effects for me - dry mouth, dizziness and muted orgasms - aren't very severe and fade after a month or so, but it's really hard to come to terms with the fact that I require medication to get through every day. Although of course every doctor and every counsellor ever will give you a diabetes talk - "You wouldn't think it was pathetic for a diabetic to need to take insulin every day would you?". It was really hard for me to start taking the medication, and while I accept it now, I find it's really difficult to get friends to deal with maybe I will have to take a pill, or a pill and a half every day for the rest of my life to be okay.
